Lady Anne Dodd on saving Ken’s hand written books
Ken Dodd’s wife Lady Anne Dodd appeared on Thursday’s BBC Breakfast where she reflected on the comedian’s life.
She admitted to breaking a promise to her husband after he died at the age of 90.
Lady Anne explained why she decided to keep the handwritten books by the comedy legend, despite his wishes to “burn them”.
As she flicked through some of the books, Lady Anne began: “In the latter years of his life, he did say, ‘You will burn everything when I’m gone’ and I promised.
“It was easier to agree, you can’t say, ‘No I won’t’, he might have to burn them himself, he was a very private person.”

As she read out one of the passages, Lady Anne continued: “‘I’m spoiling the quality of my life by being so self-indulgent and egotistical. I must take some material out’.
“And I used to say, ‘Shorter shows, longer life’.”
When asked why she wanted to keep the books, she admitted: “I never thought of burning them, I knew I wasn’t going to, I knew I couldn’t.
“Not because I thought they were valuable but I thought they were valuable because they were unique.”

“‘Next year, Liverpool will be the city of culture, we’re having classes in graffiti…’ Lady Anne laughed as she said it was the first time she’d read a passage written by her husband.
“I always thought he was clever, but I found out how much more clever he was than I realised.”
Ken, who died in March 2018, was married to Lady Anne for 40 years.
The couple decided to tie the knot just two days before the icon died.
A registrar performed the wedding at his home in Liverpool.
Anne then became a Lady due to the fact her husband had received a knighthood in 2016.
At the time of his death, Lady Anne released a statement. She said: “The world has lost the most life-enhancing, brilliant and creative comedian with an operatically trained voice, who just wanted to make people happy.”
“He lived to perfect his art and entertain his live and adoring audiences.
“I have been overwhelmed by the love and affection which I have already received from dear friends and the public, and I thank you all.”
