BBC Strictlys Angela Rippon speaks out on pro Neil Jones horror over scores

Neil Jones shocked in background as Shirley Ballas scores Angela Rippon 6

Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer Neil Jones’ has reacted to the attention surrounding his facial expressions, which gave away his thoughts on Angela Rippon’s scores on Saturday nights show.

The 79-year-old legendary broadcaster earned her lowest score of the show so far with just a six from head judge Shirley Ballas for her Waltz to Fascination by Nat King Cole with her professional partner Kai Widdrington, 28.

As the scores were read out Neil was animated in the background of the shot and mouthed, “What? No way!” as she got a 7seven from Craig Revel Horwood to begin with.

However, when Shirley brandished the six, his jaw visibly dropped in shock. Neil later took to Instagram to repost a clip of it that Angela had reposted from fan @sophia_florence_dancer to his 254,000 followers.

The original poster captioned it: “Don’t think @mr_njonesofficial agreed – the face,” followed by laughing emojis while Angela had simply added @mr_njonesofficial your face!” followed by a laughing emoji.

The low mark contributed to Angela’s overall score of just 28, which is her lowest to date and left her third from bottom on the leaderboard behind Angela Scanlon and Adam Thomas, who both scored 27.

Following her performance, the judges were less gushing than usual. Anton de Beke critiqued: “It was beautiful and elegant, as we come to expect from you. It was a little abrupt because the side steps weren’t quite large enough.

“It was elegant, it was lovely. I could have done with a bit more flow, but as I say that’s because the sidestep wasn’t quite wide enough, but other than just a lovely dance.’

Craig was his usual self, telling her: “I thought your footwork was a little bit wobbly my darling and the frame just became a little bit loose.”

However, he softened the blow adding: “You know what? You always bring to the dance floor style and elegance.”

When it was Motsi Mabuse’s turn to remark, she commented: “That was a very classical waltz. I love it when we dance a complete dance the way you exceed the competition.

“And you look beautiful in his arm. You look like it’s so easy to dance with him and whatever happens, it always looks like it’s not too much for you, it’s always at ease.

However she also had a criticism, adding: “I feel today, could we have pushed it a little bit more? Could we have given it a little bit more so we don’t play it safe?

“We are in the middle of the competition and we’re searching for our finalists, so if there is any more to give, please give.”

Meanwhile head judge Shirley, who ultimately gave her the low score that prompted Neil’s reaction said the routine needed to “draw in a little bit”, but encouraged her to “keep going”.
