Cindy Crawford slams Oprah Winfrey for ‘chattel’ treatment in 1986 talk show

The Super Models documentary teased in Apple TV+ trailer

Cindy Crawford opened up about the harsh treatment she received as a young model during her first TV appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

As the supermodel reflected on the early days of her career she slammed the TV host for treating her like “chattel” on national television.

During an episode of Apple TV+’s latest documentary series, The Super Models, the 57-year-old thought back on their interaction during the 1986 interview.

At just 20 years old, Cindy appeared on the popular talk show alongside her Elite Modeling Agency rep, John Casablancas.

The host said to Cindy: “Did she always have this body? Stand up just a moment, now this is what I call a body.”

As the young model smiled nervously, she stood up and allowed the audience and viewers at home to examine her slender frame.

Recalling her feelings in that moment, Cindy detailed: “I was like the chattel or a child, be seen and not heard.

“When you look at it through today’s eyes, Oprah’s like, ‘stand up and show me your body, show us why you’re worthy of being here.’”

She continued: “In the moment I didn’t recognize it and watching it back I was like, ‘oh my gosh, that was so not okay really,’ especially from Oprah.”

According to DailyMail.co.uk: “The clip had been available on Oprah’s YouTube channel until Tuesday evening, hours before the documentary was due to drop.”

During the interview, Oprah also directed several questions to John about Cindy.

When asked about a “training period,” he stated: “With Cindy, it was much more psychologically she was not sure she really wanted to model… little by little, her ambition is growing.

“She’s getting a sense, and I’m saying it now on this program, if she wants to she can be number one in the business.”

John’s response was backed up in the documentary as Cindy also spoke on how tough it was in the early days of her career.

The mother-of-two admitted she would “pass out” from hunger during exhausting shoot days.

As she detailed: “’I passed out there more than once. Especially right before lunch, you pass out and you would faint. And then they would prop you back up and you would do it all over again.”
