A RARE 50p worth up 600 times its value has been sold, and it could be hidden among your spare change.

The Royal Mint produced the coin more than two decades ago – and is now selling for a whopping price.


The coin was minted to mark 250 years since the opening of Kew Gardens – which are famous for its stunning green spaces and scenery.

The original design was created by created by Christopher Le Brun RA, and it features the garden's iconic Chinese Pagoda.

It also displays the years 1759 and 2009 with a decorative leafy climber twining in and around the tower. 

Only 200,000 of these coins were released, making it pretty rare.

The item was sold online after someone posted the valuable mint on eBay.

The 50p coin received six bids taking its price to a whopping £323 – which is 600 times its original value.

It comes as a similar piece was sold 300 times its value.

The rare coin attracted 36 bids on eBay on Thursday before selling for £141.

Others have been known to sell for as much as £700, with prices fluctuating depending on a number of factors.

Elsewhere, a circulated 50p coin was sold for £250 in August, thanks to it still being in relatively good condition.

You can check how much the coin is selling for on eBay, by searching the full name of the coin, selecting the "sold" listing and then toggling the search to "highest value".

It will give you a rough idea of the amount that coin is selling for.

But remember, coins are only really worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

Sometimes collectors might fork out more if they're desperate to finish a set.

Other times, you might get significantly less for the same coin.
