BBC Strictlys Amanda Abbington and Britains Got Talent fiances life together
Amanda Abbington enjoyed a whirlwind romance with Britain’s Got Talent escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, who she found love with 10 months after her four year romance with The Queen's Gambit star Jonjo O'Neill broke down.
The pair had been social media friends for over a decade before becoming romantically involved, following Amanda's split from her ex.
Amanda, 49, told The Guardian: “We were both in relationships at the time, but we admired each other’s work and occasionally liked each other’s tweets."
Years later, when they were both single, their messages to each other became gradually more flirty. But it wasn’t until August 2021 that they discovered a deeper bond between them.
Daredevil Jonathan, 43, was living in Las Vegas at the time, while Amanda was filming in Vienna.
Both smitten, Jonathan soon flew out to Vienna, where they met for the first time.
He said: "By this time, I knew that I was going to ask her to marry me. I had been planning it already, even though we’d only been talking for a month."
In a romantic twist, Jonathan proposed to Amanda within 30 minutes of their first meeting in Austria, with the pair happily engaged as of October 2021.
That same month, Jonathan was hospitalised following a terrifying accident while performing a stunt rehearsal for America’s Got Talent.
During the stunt, Jonathan was meant to escape from a straitjacket while upside-down 30 feet in the air, suspended between two cars. Instead, he became crushed between the cars as they caught fire.
Jonathan very nearly lost his life in the accident, which resulted in third degree burns, a broken spine, a severed spinal cord and even the loss of a kidney.
With Amanda at his side every step of his recovery, he was released from hospital in February 2022 as a permanent wheelchair user, having been left paralysed from the waist down by the stunt.
Amanda has received support from fiancé Jonathan after she decided to quit Strictly Come Dancing.
It was announced on Monday night that the actress has stepped away from the competition.
Speaking on Strictly's spin-off show It Takes Two, host Fleur East said: "Amanda Abbington is unable to continue in Strictly Come Dancing and has decided to withdraw from the competition. The show wishes her all the best for the future.”
Amanda's fiancé Jonathan posted a cryptic comment hours before the news was announced. He shared a selfie with the caption: "We can be so hard on ourselves…be our own worst critics… But before you judge yourself… make sure your mirror is clean."
Before Jonathan, Amanda was in a long-term relationship with her Sherlock co-star, Martin Freeman.
It was while filming Sherlock that Amanda’s romance with The Hobbit star Martin was catapulted into the public eye, with the couple having dated since first falling for each other in 2000.
Throughout their careers the couple had frequently appeared together on screen in productions such as The Debt, The Robinsons and The Good Night, all of which clearly showcased their chemistry.
Together the pair have two children, a son Joe and a daughter Grace, but amicably separated in 2016, bringing to an end their 16 year relationship.
