Man arrested for Tupac's murder 27 years later
Las Vegas police have arrested a man – Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis – over the drive-by shooting of hip-hop star Tupac Shakur 27 years ago, according to AP.
The publication reports that two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest have named Davis, 60.
The rapper was 25 when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip on the night of September 7, 1996.
The arrest is said to have come two months after Las Vegas police raided a home in connection to the murder.
In a statement shared with Metro.co.uk at the time, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said: ‘LVMPD can confirm a search warrant was served in Henderson, Nevada on July 17, 2023, as part of the ongoing Tupac Shakur homicide investigation.
‘We will have no further comment at this time.’
Shakur was in the passenger’s seat of a BMW in a convoy of others when, as they waited for a red light, someone in a white Cadillac opened fire on him.
He died a week later from multiple gunshot wounds to the arm, thigh, right lung and chest.
In his short five years making music, Shakur cemented himself as one of the most influential rappers of all time with hits like All Eyez on Me. He sold a staggering 75 million records worldwide.
Tupac’s death has long been associated with the death of the Notorious B.I.G, after he was shot and killed six months later in March 1997, and to the East Coast/West Coast rivalry.
His life and legacy have continued to impact and influence culture today, from a groundbreaking performance via hologram at the 2012 Coachella Music Festival, to a spoken-word appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly.
In June this year the rapper received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
