Russell Brand asks ‘are we being silenced’ as police receive more allegations
Russell Brand's new podcast asking if free speech is being challenged
Russell Brand returned to YouTube on Monday evening as he continued his call for fans to join him on video platform Rumble after his YouTube channel was demonetized.
Promoting his video, Russell said: “Are we being silenced? The battle for free speech streaming now on @rumblevideo.”
The comedian, 48, began his livestream just minutes after the Metropolitan Police confirmed they have received “a number of allegations of sexual assault in London” following news reports about Russell.
In a short statement, police said all allegations were non-recent and there have been no arrests.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime Command, said: “We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, no matter how long ago it was, to contact us.
“We understand it can feel like a difficult step to take and I want to reassure that we have a team of specialist officers available to advise and support.”
The force said it will be offering specialist support to all of the women who have made allegations.
On Saturday, Brand shared another video and said it has been an “extraordinary and distressing week”.
He has been at the centre of allegations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse during the height of his fame between 2006 and 2013.
The allegations were made by four women in an investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times last weekend.
He has denied all allegations and claimed his relationships have always been consensual.
In a pre-emptive video shared prior to the expose being published, he said he was “very promiscuous” but “refutes these very serious criminal allegations”.
He added: “I don’t want to get into this any further because of the serious nature of the allegations, but I feel like I’m being attacked, and plainly they are working very closely together.
“We are obviously going to look into this matter, because it’s very very serious. In the meantime I want you to stay close, stay awake, but more important than any of that, if you can, please stay free.”
