Motion Picture Academy Moves Governors Awards To January In Strike-Related Delay

In what is clearly a strike-related delay, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has moved the 14th Annual Governors Awards forward two months to Tuesday, January 9, 2024, still to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The Academy’s official press release made no mention of a reason for the delay, but sources have been telling me discussions have been in the works and it is clearly due to the strike situation which continues to wreak havoc to many aspects of the industry and its events.

Governors Awards: Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, Carol Littleton Voted Honorary Oscars; Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter Set For Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award

The ceremony presenting honorary Oscars to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, editor Carol Littleton, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter had originally been set for Saturday November 18, 2023 where it would have been in its usual position to also serve as a prime kickoff for the campaign season as studios and distributors buy tables and fill them with their Oscar contenders. Now it will be taking place at possibly an even more crucial time in the season (at least for Oscars), just two days before nomination voting begins on January 11 and exactly two weeks before nominations are announced on Tuesday January 23.

January is now an incredibly, and unusually, crowded month awards-wise with the Primetime and Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies also moving due to ongoing SAG and WGA strike concerns. The Primetime Emmys originally set for September 18, 2023 are now on MLK day, Monday January 15, 2024, while the Creative Arts dual ceremonies take place on January 6 and 7, the latter date also where the Golden Globes intend to hold their ceremony. The AFI Awards luncheon is set for Friday January 5. On the day before the Primetime Emmys, the Critics Choice Awards will take place January 14 at the same Fairmont Hotel where the Governors Awards will now happen just five days earlier. Whew! Fasten your seatbelts.

This isn’t the first time the Governors Awards have had to move. Covid concerns delayed the ceremony two years ago when they were presented in a stripped-down event two days before the Oscar ceremony in Hollywood.

Another big AMPAS Fall event, the Academy Museum Gala fundraiser which will honor Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, and Sofia Coppola is set to take place on October 14, 2023 and is not expected to move as the Academy said it had been given permission to move forward by both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
