BBC Breakfast and Radio 5 host Rachel Burden has apologised for her “lazy use of language” after causing offence with a tweet she wrote about teachers on Sunday evening. Ahead of presenting the In My Opinion segment on her show alongside Rick Edwards on Monday, the 48-year-old, tweeted: “Our #InMyOpinion tomorrow – it’s time to stop giving teachers gifts at Christmas – it’s unfair on families that can’t afford it – and could lead to favouritism. Do you agree?”

Many of the presenter’s 104,000 followers flocked to her post to share their thoughts, with many particularly taking issue with the “favouritism” suggestion. One wrote: “I’m uncomfortable with the discussion moving into favouritism. Do you really need to call teachers integrity into question when they are all on their knees from school productions, concerts, Christmas parties etc?”

A second wrote: “Favouritism?!? Really? You think teachers favour kids who give them a box of chocolates at Christmas? Tell me you know nothing about teachers without telling me.” A third typed: “Dangerous post. Favouritism? Really? Teachers work bloody hard so deserve gifts from parents who can afford it, not needed from parents that can’t. Sad times if you start this debate.”

A fourth echoed: “I think you should leave teachers alone. They don’t expect gifts and almost all say it’s the thank you notes they treasure. The accusation that teachers would favour children who brought them presents is both ridiculous and deeply insulting.”

Ahead of discussing the topic on the latest edition of their show, Rachel followed up the tweet, writing: “Understandably this tweet has p****d off a lot of people. Lazy use of language on my part. Our #IMO guest this morning says giving gifts could ‘put teachers in an awkward position’. Apologies from me.”

On-air, Rachel’s co-host joked that her apology about the tweet gave him “a little lift” this morning as he reminded her about the backlash. “Well that’s what I’m here for,” she replied. “Yeah, that was a poor use of language on my part.”

Rachel proceeded to explain: “I put out a tweet, I then turn off my phone and go to bed. I woke up this morning to a lot of angry messages, which were justified, because I, well not me, I put the idea out that our guest said one of the issues giving gifts is that it might cause favouritism.

“Now, our guest does not use that word, so it was wrong of me to use that word, so I’d like to apologise.” She went on to clarify that the guest had said it could put teachers in an awkward position, as oppose to causing favouritism.

Rachel added she understood the “very strong pushback” from those of the teaching community ahead of reading out some responses. The presenter went on to say that despite her error, she believes the topic was still worth talking about in a time where parents may already be struggling financially.
