Outlander’s Catriona Balfe discusses parenting during filming

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander.

Outlander season seven saw a character’s life in danger with filming of the death-defying scene shot twice.

The time travel Starz series returned for the first part of its latest outing earlier this year, welcoming Jamie Fraser’s (played by Sam Heughan) grown-up illegitimate son William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) into the fold.

As a soldier in the British Army, in the episode The Most Uncomfortable Woman, William is summoned to meet his commanding officer Captain Ezekiel Richardson (Chris Fulton).

He is told to deliver three messages to three men in Dismal Town, deep in the Great Dismal Swamp on the North Carolina and Virginia border.

It is during this mission that William has a near-death experience that had subscribers worried for his welfare.

Midway through his travels, William’s horse is spooked by a snake and Jamie’s son is thrown off the animal.

He then rolls down a hill and lands on a large stick which digs painfully into his arm, causing William to involuntarily scream.

Speaking on the official Outlander podcast, executive producer Matthew B Roberts talked about the filming of this particular scene where, thankfully, no one was hurt in real life.

“Not a real snake so the horse was never in danger, neither was that fantastic stuntman who rolled all the way down that hill.”

“This scene was actually filmed twice, we had to get it right, make it feel like this injury could be life-threatening.

“And with practical blood, visual effects, we think it all came together really nice.”

Roberts then went on to sing William Ransom star Charles Vandervaart’s praises as a newcomer in season seven.

“We have Charles [Vandervaart] doing a fantastic job here, he’s really come into a tough situation.”
