Channel 4 viewers have been left 'feeling sick' after watching the lates episode of Supermarkets Unwrapped as they got to see first-hand how vegan sausages are made.

The documentary saw Helen Lawal visit Tesco to learn more about vegan burgers, Briony May Williams learned how to make an egg-less quiche and Kate Quilton find out exactly how dairy-free milk is made. However, it was John Whaite's visited a sausage factory to watch vegan bangers being produced that took it too far for viewers.

In the segment, John visited Heck Foods in Yorkshire to meet innovations manager Callum Smith, who oversees the production of over 600 sausages a day. The pair were seen standing by a machine discussing how they make the skin for the product to immitate the real thing.

A clip shows vegetable sausage mix passing under a curtain of calcium chloride solution, which gives the sausages it's skin. It is then cut and it's ready to be cut into individual portions.

Callum said the skin gives sausages a 'snap', explaining: "We use a textured vegetable protein and then we've developed some flavours to make it taste like a pork sausage. We bump the meat-free sausage mix and a gel into this little head at the same time. This is alginate gel and it's made from a seaweed."

John dunked some gel into the calcium chloride solution to have a feel of the skin it forms for himself. He told Callum that it had "really stiffened up". But he had originally thought calcium chloride was only used to de-ice roads.

However, the scene disgusted viewers who immediately took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reaction to the produce being made. One user wrote: "Urgh… I rarely watch live TV but watching Supermarkets Unwrapped, and feeling sick watching the food being made… this is not a good program."

Another added: "This Channel 4 programme really showing some disgusting concoctions in the making of vegan food."

Meanwhile, a third commented: "Watching Supermarkets Unwrapped on Channel 4. They're doing vegan aisle. Dear God, the extent manufacturers will go to produce UPF [ultra-processed food] c*** to replace natural foods. If you want to be vegan, eat actual plants, not this synethetic sh**."
