Hairy Bikers chef Dave Myers has paid a poignant tribute to his co-stars and crew after the supportive time helped him through a gruelling regime of chemotherapy amid his ongoing cancer battle.

The 66 year old star was first diagnosed with cancer in May 2022, and admitted he wanted his upcoming Christmas special alongside fellow Hairy Biker Si King, to be a “celebration that 18 months since my diagnosis I’m still here.”

Reflecting on a whirlwind 18 months, Dave told the Radio Times, "I’ve done a series with my best mate, we’re back on the bikes, we’ve written a new book… We’ve had a bloody good time,” as he listed off his list of accomplishments despite undergoing a gruelling cancer battle away from the cameras.

During the interview, both Dave and Si looked back at their thirty year career, as the pair revealed they had first met on the set of a TV drama all the way back in 1992, when Si was the second assistant director and Dave was the head of make-up.

It was this experience behind the scenes that helped them to keep a level head when they stepped into the spotlight as celebrity chefs.

Looking back in the experience, Dave said:”One thing that irritated me was when “talent” referred to people by their job titles. It’s easy to learn someone’s name if you’re on the road for three months, don’t just call them “Soundie”! “

Si then weighed in as he added: “And there’s several who do. If you forget common decency, politeness and kindness because you’re egocentric and off your chump with success, it’s not on.”

It was then that Dave touched on his own experience of working with such kind hearted people during his illness, as he affectionately gushed that he “couldn’t have done” chemo without their support.

“I’ve been having cancer treatment and we’ve just finished filming a series – the crew made so many compromises to suit me; they’d give me a chair if I’d been standing,” explained Dave.

“I was terribly grateful. Without them, I couldn’t have done it.”

Although the gruelling treatment was no doubt a debilitating experience for Dave, the chef did reveal that thankfully his taste and appetite for Irish coffee cake, hadn’t been lost while undergoing chemotherapy.

“The Irish coffee cake was a stretch to get down while having chemo, but it stayed there. So, it worked!” quipped the chef.

Fans of the duo will no doubt be relieved to hear that Dave’s treatment has gone so well, with the Christmas special of their upcoming show due to hit our screens later this month.

The Hairy Bikers: Coming Home For Christmas airs Tuesday 19 December at 9pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer
