Driving tip: How to defrost your windscreen

A frosty windshield can take ages to defrost sometimes, thankfully a NASA engineer has shared her hacks to speed things up.

We all know the dread of waiting in your freezing car while your windshield defrosts all too well.

While NASA engineers are no exception to the laws of nature, they’ve got tricks up their sleeves to make the process much faster.

In a TikTok video, one engineer shared her best four-step method that can help defrost your car windshield in seconds.

Posting on Eden Tyres and Servicing’s account, the engineer hopped into a frosty car and defrosted the window within seconds almost by magic.

She said: “Here is the best way to defrost your windscreen according to a NASA engineer. Step one, turn on your car heater immediately, and put it at full blast.

“Step two, turn on the car’s air conditioning, as it’ll help to soak up any remaining moisture inside. Step three, turn off the car’s air circulation button – when turned on this traps the humidity.

“Step four, slightly unexpected, but open all of the car windows, only ever so slightly as this will help exchange humidity in the car for the dry air that’s outside – and voila, a nice defrosted windscreen.”

Other users chimed in in the comments section, adding in their own tips. One said: “Put your sun visors down as it traps more of the hot air against the screen”.

Another added: “Wake up a little earlier, start your car, turn the heat up, and the defrost buttons, should be defrosted in 10-15 minutes.”

The AAA also encouraged drivers to set their temperatures to hot and open the window.

They said: “To defrost your windows, set the temperature control to hot and let the engine warm up, which helps keep frost from forming inside.

“If the windshield and side windows fog on the inside, open a window slightly and set the fan to a higher speed.”
