Tourists have revealed the ‘brutal’ comments they received while trying to be fashionable in Ireland.<\/p>\n
Jane, from Waterford, opened a can of worms when she shared the ‘shocking’ backlash she experienced after sporting an accessory.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Props to anyone who tries to be fashionable in Ireland,’ she said in a now-viral X post. ‘I wore a red beret once in Waterford and someone called me Super Mario.’<\/p>\n
Her post sparked a series of responses where hundreds shared their experiences being jovially criticised.<\/p>\n
‘I wore a suit with a matching tie and pocket square to my first day of work at an advertising company (I thought I was going to be in Mad Men, I guess) and the staff sent around and signed a communion card for me with a fiver in it,’ a man wrote.<\/p>\n

Jane shared that she wore a red beret once and an Irish man called her ‘Super Mario’<\/p>\n
Others were poked fun at for wearing ‘interesting’ jackets and overcoats.<\/p>\n
‘I was wearing a vintage Nike jacket in a very long queue for drinks at a boxing match when a Belfast\u00a0lad goes: ‘F**k me this is taking forever, your man has been here since the 80s’,’ a man said.<\/p>\n
‘I once wore a silver jacket to university, turned up late for class, apologised, and the lecturer waited until I was halfway across the front of the full class before saying\u00a0 ‘That’s okay, trouble with the spaceship again was it?’,’ another shared.<\/p>\n
A woman revealed: ‘I wore an orange rain poncho to an outdoor show at Prospect Park during a storm and some girl who was on the phone trying to find her friends said: ‘I’m standing next to someone who looks like a f***ing traffic cone’.’<\/p>\n
‘My sister was in France sporting a new trench coat, thought it was so stylish, but she went into an Irish bar and got called inspector Gadget by the first guy who saw her,’ a man said.<\/p>\n

A woman was delighted with her brand new overcoat only for an Irish man to tell her she looked like Inspector Gadget\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Irish sense of humour also comes out during tragic events.<\/p>\n
‘My mum wore a fur hat to her aunt’s funeral in December. She went to sympathise with her cousins only to be greeted with ‘Patricia, how was Moscow?’ The rest of the day she was introduced as ‘the Russian cousin’ by everyone else,’ a woman said.<\/p>\n
Many others also shared how ‘safe’ outfits could also result in harmless jabs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘I thought I was cute wearing a black turtleneck with light blue jeans, glasses, and a ponytail but my Irish roommate asked my if I’m launching a new iPhone,’ a woman wrote.<\/p>\n
‘I was wearing a nice pair of jeans and a smart jumper while going to a date – but my Uber drive me told me I looked like an undercover policeman,’ a man revealed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
