The Wednesday letters page hopes that Hideki Kamiya sets up a new indie developer, as one reader worries about the future of BioWare.

To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk

Honest problem He’s right, they will have to increase prices to £70 and hope plenty of people are happy to spend £100 on a week’s early access (I find it hard to believe, but apparently they are). These companies need to make money and I find people petulantly demanding that prices should never increase (there was plenty of talk like this in the comments) are out of touch with reality.

The only alternative is that games should be shorter or… uglier. Nobody’s going to put up with last gen, or worse graphics, and as much as I would welcome games that were 12 hours tops there’ll immediately be complaints when they’re still only £50. The fact remains that video games have barely increased in price in 30 years and yet they’re massively more complex than they used to be.

Don’t get me wrong, I wish they were cheaper but I don’t see how that’s financially possible and I don’t believe most gamers are being realistic in the way they discuss the problem. Flaw in the plan I’m not even commenting on whether that’s fair or not, it’s just super obvious that nobody is going to do that, even if they are rich enough to buy the new phone. Apple would be much better extending Apple Arcade to AAA games as that’s actually a good service. Although I don’t see how they’d ever make their money back with that, as it’s only £5 a month, I think. Mass worry I hope it doesn’t happen but they’ve done it so many times before there’s no way it’s a baseless fear. After Star Wars Jedi: Survivor proved to them that single-player games can sell they should’ve upped the staff at BioWare, maybe even opened another studio, but instead they don’t seem to be giving them the money or resources they need.

Starfield made me very hungry for more Mass Effect but I don’t think we’ll see that new game for at least three to five years. Heck, I wouldn’t even bet on Dragon Age 4 next year. It’s a sad state of affairs but it feels like BioWare are on death’s row and only a phone call away from being led to the execution chamber. E-mail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk

Song of Storms I enjoyed Tears Of The Kingdom but in general terms I do wish for a return to the old style of Zelda. I know that is unlikely but what Skyward Sword also reminded me of is how central music has been throughout the Zelda series, as an actual gameplay element.

For example, the harp in Skyward Sword. Both Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom don’t feature music in any such integral way, which is a shame, I feel, and may be one element of older Zeldas that could return in future games. Strange departure I guess the rumour that he’ll turn up at a Chinese publisher are true but I hope he’s able to set up his own indie studio rather than give up the independence of Platinum in favour of working for some global corporation. Although saying that, if Microsoft had any sense they’d wave a few hundred million at him and help him set up a new studio to make Scalebound. Working as intended I can’t dispute it is actually easier as a consequence but I would hasten to offer that the reason the game did so well is due to the fact it had so much coverage beforehand, won game of the year in the awards, and had many happy customers beforehand. You couldn’t escape it in 2022.

I really don’t think it was a conscious decision to broaden the customer base by diluting their vision. It’s not their style.

Thanks for entertaining my thoughts and respect. GC: He might have said that but it’s very hard to see the ashes and less restrictive co-op options as anything but attempts to soften the difficultly level. We struggle to believe he would’ve added them and not anticipated their effect, which, either way, is not a dilution of anything.

Behind schedule So what went wrong? Are these games just delayed or have they been scrapped entirely? I’d like to think it was that but I don’t think we’ll be that lucky. Actually, I’m not sure that’s even fair. I’d at least like to know what they’re planning before I pass judgment but when am I going to be able to do that? Expert opinion 1) The offensive transition is too strong, due to the low IQ of transition in defence. Players will still step forward from the last line of defence, leaving gaps for through balls on counter-attacks.

2) 1v1 offence over powers defence significantly, especially with the new dribbling techniques added.

3) Too easy for a team to build-up from their own half. This should take a bit more skill/IQ/tactics trying to search for spaces to exit the pressure.

4) The tactic forward runs makes no sense. Attacks runs through the spaces and receive through balls that splits everyone.

5) Gamers play with ‘RB’ and ‘LB’ staying back while attacking and two defensive midfielders staying back while attacking and their offence is just as strong if not stronger than a gamer that creates overloads. It should be harder to break the last line when players use such tactic.

I attack with fullbacks up, centre backs joining attack and these guys are attacking with four players and their attacks are stronger than mines. GC: We have no idea what any of that means but we assume you know what you’re talking about.

Inbox also-rans The Last Of Us Day had a livestream that didn’t talk about the game or the TV show, just some posters and T-shirts? If this is all some big practical joke on Sony’s part I don’t get it. This week’s Hot Topic The exact age of the game doesn’t matter but what was it exactly that put you off? Was it the graphics, the gameplay, the controls, or something else? Do you find that you cannot play games after a certain point in time or is it all on a case-by-case basis?

Which games do you feel have aged the best and are there any common issues you’ve noticed, in the ones that have not?

E-mail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk

The small print You can also submit your own 500 to 600-word Reader’s Feature at any time via email or our Submit Stuff page, which if used will be shown in the next available weekend slot.

You can also leave your comments below and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter.

Interesting to see Capcom’s boss speaking very honestly about video game prices. We know this problem has been building for years and you can see how out of control it’s got in terms of how long games take to make nowadays and what happens to developers the second they have anything close to a flop.

That pricing for Resident Evil 4 on the iPhone 15 Pro is hilarious. I cannot believe that Apple does not employ anyone that wasn’t able to point out that nobody is going to pay almost £60 for a mobile app. Heck, I’d be surprised if anyone was willing to pay more than £5.

I’d love to think that the success of Starfield would lead to EA pumping more money into Mass Effect 4 but I’m sure I’m not the only one that worries about the future of BioWare. They’ve produced absolutely nothing for so long now that after the recent job cuts I can totally imagine EA just shutting them down.

I am nearing completion of The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on Switch and it has reminded me of how much I enjoyed it back on the Wii when it was first released.

I’ve been trying to read between the lines of Hideki Kamiya leaving PlatinumGames and I can’t come to any conclusion. The tweets seem to be positive but even with the vagaries of translations they seem oddly worded, as if they’re trying to say more than they do.

Coolin

Hidetaka Miyazaki literally said himself, when interviewed, that they didn’t intend to design it easier, it came out that way due to the nature of transposing it to an open world.

Glad to know that Sony is wasting its time trying to bring back PlayStation Home than making any games. I didn’t realise, before that story, that there was supposed to be 10 live service games by 2026. I mean, it’s getting towards the end of 2023 now, so that obviously isn’t going to happen.

The PAL Ico cover is the best game cover of all time. Closely followed by the PAL Resident Evil 4 Wii cover. Change my mind.

The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Sunny, who asks which older games are you now unable to play because they feel too outdated?

New Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. Readers’ letters are used on merit and may be edited for length and content.
