Top Gear is reportedly unlikely to return after Freddie Flintoff’s horror high speed crash.

The England cricket captain, 45, was hospitalised last December after he suffered facial injuries in an accident while shooting for Top Gear at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

At the time, it was reported that he was ‘lucky to be alive’ after the horror incident at the test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey on December 13.

The BBC and government body, the Health and Safety Executive, both launched probes into the accident last year, with a statement issued insisting that ‘all health and safety procedures were followed.’

While many have questioned whether the show will come back to the screens, according to reports, the Top Gear production team has been ‘dismantled.’

An insider also told Mail On Sunday that the 34th series, which was already partially filmed, will not be finished and there are no plans to broadcast it.

In March, the BBC announced that ‘under the circumstances’ it ‘would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear at this time’ following an internal investigation into the accident.

Chief content officer Charlotte Moore later said the focus is on his recovery, rather than rushing to get the show back on air.

A statement from BBC Studios earlier this year said it had ‘concluded its investigation into the accident at the Top Gear Test Track in Surrey last December, which regrettably injured presenter Freddie Flintoff’.

It continued: ‘We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear at this time.

‘We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year.

‘This has also impacted the production team, who we continue to support.’

Metro.co.uk has reached out to BBC for comment.

Top Gear is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Got a story?

If you’ve got a celebrity story, video or pictures get in touch with the Metro.co.uk entertainment team by emailing us celebtips@metro.co.uk, calling 020 3615 2145 or by visiting our Submit Stuff page – we’d love to hear from you.
