Margaret Lyons<\/span><\/p>\nFor reasons no one can quite decipher, the legal soap \u201cSuits,\u201d which aired on USA from 2011-2019, has become the show of the summer. While it was popular enough when it aired, I\u2019ve read more \u201cSuits\u201d articles in the last few weeks than during the show\u2019s entire run.<\/p>\n
The show is a hit on Netflix, but if you are on your \u201cSuits\u201d journey right now, note that the ninth and final season is in fact not on Netflix \u2014 though it is on Peacock and Amazon.<\/p>\n
Perhaps you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWow, if only there were a spinoff to \u2018Suits,\u2019 surely everyone would want in on that.\u201d Well, there is a spinoff to \u201cSuits,\u201d called \u201cPearson,\u201d which follows Gina Torres\u2019s character, Jessica Pearson, on her next legal endeavor. But in a perfect snapshot of the inane and hostile world of streaming, \u201cPearson\u201d is not streaming on any platform. Make it make sense!<\/p>\n
But we come here not to gripe but to savor. I think \u201cSuits\u201d is a ton of fun for a while and then peters out big time; exactly where this decline begins is in the eye of the beholder, but for me Season 3 is on shaky ground and Season 4 starts a marked decline.<\/p>\n
If you feel you\u2019ve gotten what you need out of \u201cSuits\u201d and want something else that maintains the bracing abundance of corporate air conditioning, here are some follow-ups.<\/p>\n
I want something \u2026 better.<\/h2>\n
\u2018The Good Wife\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nWhere to watch: <\/strong>Freevee and Paramount+.<\/p>\n\u201cThe Good Wife\u201d does a lot of what \u201cSuits\u201d does, only smarter and more adult: There is constant and glorious sexual tension among all characters, everyone is chic and smart, and much of the legal maneuvering happens in the office and not just the courtroom. (Both shows also vastly overestimate the intrigue of the partners playing musical chairs, of who will start their own firm, of whose name is on the blah blah \u2014 I do not care.)<\/p>\n
Also like \u201cSuits,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d has a spinoff that follows the female partner of the big firm (Christine Baranski) on her new adventure, though \u201cThe Good Fight\u201d is richer than \u201cPearson.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWife\u201d has a lot more to say than \u201cSuits\u201d does, and it\u2019s more overtly political and a bit darker. But ye gods, the smoldering stares, the standing-too-close-in-the-office-library moments, the delayed gratification of will-they-won\u2019t-theys \u2014 if that\u2019s what you crave, there\u2019s more than enough of that here, too.<\/p>\n
I want something more outrageous.<\/h2>\n
\u2018Scandal\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nWhere to watch: <\/strong>Hulu.<\/p>\nIf you like the horny loyalty that binds all the characters at Pearson Hardman, you\u2019ll love the murderous devotion all the employees of Olivia Pope & Associates display.<\/p>\n
The officewear is even snazzier on \u201cScandal,\u201d and the stakes are a lot higher: The show, starring Kerry Washington, is set at a Washington D.C. crisis firm, and many of the crises involve the president. \u201cScandal\u201d has a ton of torture and violence, and in that way might be less soothing than \u201cSuits,\u201d but it is also bantery and juicy, and secrets abound. The shows share affection for sumptuous wine goblets, reverence for one\u2019s mentors and velvety dress-downs that perhaps start with a powerful person telling an underling, \u201cI like you \u2026,\u201d before unleashing viciousness.<\/p>\n
\u201cScandal\u201d and \u201cSuits\u201d were contemporaries, and I remember at the time reveling in how much more story \u201cScandal\u201d was willing to burn through, how fast its metabolism was in comparison to the foot-dragging that eventually drove me crazy on \u201cSuits.\u201d Each show ran out of steam in its own ways, so stick with a \u201cwatch it until you get tired of it; know that there is no late-game resurgence\u201d approach. (Season 1 starts slow, so consider just starting with Season 2.)<\/p>\n
I want something goofier.<\/h2>\n
\u2018Psych\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nWhere to watch: <\/strong>Amazon and Peacock.<\/p>\n\u201cPsych\u201d is among the USA brethren of \u201cSuits,\u201d and it shares a \u201ccute, cocky white guy does a convincing social fraud\u201d as its backbone. On \u201cSuits,\u201d it\u2019s Mike (Patrick J. Adams) pretending to be a licensed lawyer when he\u2019s actually just an autodidact; on \u201cPsych,\u201d it\u2019s Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) pretending to be a psychic to help the police solve crimes when he\u2019s actually just a keen observer.<\/p>\n
\u201cPsych\u201d is less glam than \u201cSuits\u201d but more poppy and bright, and there are 120 episodes plus three movies, so there\u2019s a similar \u201cI\u2019ll never run out of these!\u201d Zen.<\/p>\n
One of the appeals of \u201cSuits\u201d is that it punches above its weight class \u2014 smarter and zippier than chuga-chuga lawyer shows. \u201cPsych\u201d is similar. Plenty of shows followed the \u201cMonk\u201d and \u201cHouse\u201d formula, but not many are as funny as \u201cPsych,\u201d or as creative. \u201cPsych\u201d has a whole \u201cTwin Peaks\u201d spoof episode!<\/p>\n
I like when a man yells, \u2018Donna!\u2019<\/h2>\n
\u2018The West Wing\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nWhere to watch:<\/strong> Max.<\/p>\n\u201cSuits\u201d is quintessential diet Sorkin; some of its banter especially echoes \u201cThe West Wing\u201d and \u201cThe American President.\u201d More concretely, \u201cWest Wing\u201d and \u201cSuits\u201d both have central duos of a vaguely obnoxious boss (Gabriel Macht in \u201cSuits,\u201d Bradley Whitford in \u201cWest Wing) and his painfully devoted assistant named Donna (Sarah Rafferty, Janel Moloney), whom he protects and reveres but also sometimes scolds.<\/p>\n
Both shows also love Ivy League credentials, though \u201cWest Wing\u201d likes fancy schooling in a more general sense \u2014 the president (Martin Sheen) is a Notre Dame alum, for example \u2014 while everyone on \u201cSuits\u201d has a tiresome and laughable obsession with Harvard and Harvard only.<\/p>\n
