University Challenge in sexism row as contestant repeatedly snubs his teammate

University Challenge fans were in uproar at a “sexist” contestant who repeatedly snubbed his teammate.

The Jeremy Paxman-hosted quiz show saw Newcastle University and the Open University go head-to-head in a tense battle of wits – but Newcastle’s Sam Keay found himself in hot water online.

As the show returned for its latest series after announcing that broadcaster Amol Rajan is set to take over from Paxman in 2023, Sam Keay appeared to consistently ignore input from his female teammate.

The Bedford native studied linguistics with Japanese, while his co-star Elizabeth Lamb opted for a Masters course in film theory and practice.

Their frosty dynamic had viewers fuming as Keay ignored Lamb’s answers as the team conferred on the tough questions put to them.

One Twitter user wrote: “Every series of University Challenge there’s a man who doesn’t listen to the woman on his team.”

As another fumed: “F***’s sake Keay try actually listening to Lamb please!”

Another argued: “Keay needs to listen to Lamb and say what she tells him instead of what he wants to say.”

“Will Keay please listen to Lamb? She’s giving him far more answers than the other two on the team, but of course she’s not a man so what does she know?” a fourth viewer said.

During the episode, Lamb kept trying to tell Keay that the answer to one question was ‘Cannes’ – but he repeatedly said ‘The Cannes’ instead.

One fan giggled at the exchange: “If they were married they’d be getting divorced in the morning!” as another said: “I don’t think Lamb will ever talk to Keay again…”

As captain, Keay was responsible for giving answers to Jeremy, but his refusal to defer to his team-mates or even listen to their input had some viewers questioning why he was elected as spokesperson.

“How was Keay picked as captain?” one baffled fan asked with a cry-laughing emoji.

“Corruption!” someone else laughed.
