Tom Holland Reveals Details About a Forgotten Spider-Man Script He Hopes Gets Made

While Marvel is not expected to unveil its next movies until this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Tom Holland already has an idea for the next standalone Spider-Man movie. And if you’ve seen Spider-Man: Far From Home, you know the door has swung open ridiculously wide for the sequel.

Of course, a Spider-Man 3 in the MCU is pretty much a given anyway, sight unseen. Marvel may or may not know where their third Spidey movie could go, and even if they do, they’d never reveal what they’re planning.

That said, there are thousands of ideas Marvel could choose from, but the one Holland has in mind isn’t his idea: It was James Cameron’s.

‘Titanic’ director James Cameron almost made Spider-Man

Considering Spider-Man is pretty much to Marvel what Mickey Mouse is to Disney, it took a long time for a Spider-Man movie to get going. While Warner Bros. had seen enormous success with their Batman and Superman films, Spider-Man only made it big on TV before the 21st century. There were plenty of cartoons, but his live-action appearances were limited to appearances on Children’s Television Workshop’s The Electric Company and a very cheesy and short-lived TV series in the late 70s.

It wasn’t for lack of Hollywood trying, though. James Cameron, who broke big with the Terminator films and Aliens, took a crack at Spider-Man in the early 1990s.  His drafts, written with other collaborators, overflowed with ideas, featuring not only Electro, Sandman and Doctor Octopus, but risque elements such as Mary Jane and Peter Parker having sex on the Brooklyn Bridge. Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for Spider-Man, and Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to play Doctor Octopus.

Although that script can be viewed online, it was never filmed because the company that was going to produce it, Carloco, went bankrupt. Eventually, the rights to the character passed to Sony, who produced a very successful series of movies starting in 2002. Now Sony shares the character with Marvel Studios, which made Homecoming and Far From Home.

Tom Holland wants to fight dinosaurs

If the current Spider-Man were also the studio chief, he’d be shooting webs at prehistoric lizards. Movieweb quoted an interview in which Holland said:

There is a Spider-Man comic where he’s fighting Doc Ock in a private plane and he falls out of the plane into a jungle and then there’s dinosaurs in the jungle and stuff. That’s what James Cameron’s Spider-Man was going to be about. He wrote a Spider-Man script and it was about Spider-Man fighting dinosaurs I think. It’d be like Jurassic Park: Spider-Man Awakening or something like that.

Movieweb tried to find the comic that Holland referenced, but didn’t find an exact match. The closest they could come up with was Marvel Team-Up #20, which sees Spider-Man team up with Black Panther to fight Stegron the Dinosaur Man. Black Panther 2, anyone?

Why the dinosaurs probably won’t happen

That idea may have fans screaming: “Shut up and take my money!” Sadly, it’s unlikely for a few different reasons. Spider-Man director Jon Watts and Marvel President Kevin Feige have said they want to show Spider-Man with villains we have not already seen in the movies. While that doesn’t necessarily preclude dinosaurs, it would preclude Doctor Octopus.

And while Spider-Man has not specifically battled a dinosaur in the movies, he did fight the Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, the first of Andrew Garfield’s two films. Despite Rhys Ifans’ best efforts, that rendition of the Lizard has not been well remembered.

The best guess for the third Marvel/Sony movie’s villain is Kraven the Hunter, a Russian big-game enthusiast who wants to collect Spider-Man. He probably wouldn’t be above bagging a dinosaur, though. He might have fit right into The Lost World: Jurassic Park
