In Channel 5 thriller The Madame Blanc Mysteries, the 48-year-old actress plays antique dealer Jean White, who is left penniless when husband Rory (Steve Edge) dies. Sally, who played Street barmaid Shelley Unwin for six years, thinks the family-friendly show is exactly what the nation needs.

She said: “It had to have relatable characters so parents could sit down and watch it with their kids and just escape for an hour because I think we need that at the moment.

“I love Doc Martin, Midsomer Murders and Death In Paradise and I wanted to write a modern classic like that really; a returning drama that everyone could relate to.

“I have always been fascinated by the worlds of antiques and Agatha Christie and wanted to combine the two to create a ‘warm bath’ show.”

The drama should have been filmed last March but production was halted due to Covid and it was delayed for a year.

Sally said: “We finally managed to film it this March so we have had a lot of time to breathe and tweak it.”

Sally was speaking at the Golden Chopsticks Asian food awards.
