Hulu’s dystopian series followed the life of June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) as she attempted to escape Gilead and its patriarchal society. Season four ended with Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) in custody and may have hinted towards her character staying in Canada.

When Gilead went into power Serena held the respected position as the wife of Commander Fred Waterford.

Although she had no rights as a woman living in the state she had the power and privilege that came with being a wife.

When June joined the household as a Handmaid, Serena was seemingly infertile and desperate for a baby.

This led her to hold June down whenever Fred would rape her for a baby and when that didn’t work she secretly enlisted his driver Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) to forcibly inseminate her.

Alongside her husband, Serena was one of the establishers of Gilead, before the state went into power she was an author and wrote a novel called A Woman’s Place.

She stated that women should submit to their ‘biological destiny’ as mothers and child-bearers rather than pursue high-powered jobs or fulfilling carers.

Although she received hate during her book tour she gained the support of men who wanted to revolutionise Gilead.

However, when the state went into power it backfired, as she was shut out of politics and was forbidden to read – because she was a woman.

Eventually, June became pregnant and gave birth, keeping to her vow of escaping Gilead, she kidnapped the baby, gave her to a fugitive Handmaid who made it to freedom in Canada.

Serena was distraught and desperate to see the child, so she made a deal with the Canadian authorities to hand Fred in for visitation rights.

Although the plan went ahead, this also backfired after visitation was stripped when they discovered she had a hand in creating Gilead.

With both Fred and Serena in custody, she found out she was pregnant as they were awaiting trial.

Fred met his death in the shocking season finale, after June and other ex-handmaids beat him to death.

In an interview with lofficielmontecarlo.com, actress Yvonne shared: “I am excited to see where Serena’s story goes, especially if it is a whole new world in Canada.

She added: “I can see her becoming a political figure with a following there and picking up where she left off pre-Gilead and writing books about her points of view.”

This could be a major clue for Serena’s fate in the upcoming season five as she is yet to find out about Fred’s death.

Many fans speculated if she would return to Gilead, however with her pregnancy her child would officially belong to the state.

There she could also face an even more brutal trial for agreeing to give the Canadian authorities evidence to arrest Fred.

In season four, viewers also saw as the couple exited the courthouse they had a bunch of supporters, so Canada could be the place for her to continue her works.

After all, she would have more freedom and be allowed to read, fans will remember when her finger got sliced off after she read in an act of rebellion.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
