The Continental is set to be the spin-off series of the hit film franchise John Wick. The Starz show is still in early development, but fans just got the first major casting announcement. Mel Gibson will be leading the show and some fans are not happy to hear the news.
The Continental will be taking the John Wick franchise in a new direction away from the original title star Keanu Reeves.
Set to be a prequel, the show will focus on the hotel organisation in which international hitmen and women operate.
The story will be seen through the eyes of a young Winston, played by Ian McShane in the original films.
Set in 1975, Winston is dragged through the criminal underbelly of New York City as he attempts to seize control of the icon hotel first seen in 2014’s John Wick.
Gibson has been the first star to be attached to the project, though currently, his role is unspecified.
The Braveheart and Lethal Weapon star has been a controversial figure in Hollywood, often being cited for divisive comments over the years.
Upon news of his casting, viewers rushed to social media to share their thoughts on Gibson returning to the small screen.
On Twitter, @caytibinba wrote: “How to get people to stop watching any John Wick movie or series in one easy step.”
“How can you go from associating ‘The Continental” with Ian McShane to associating it with Mel Gibson? This just killed it for me,” @chalkystrong said.
“Welp, *there’s* a good way to kill a project before it ever gets off the ground. @STARZ @LionsgateTV – Mel Gibson?? Hard pass,” @ScorpioRoze added.
@GeoffreyKeel shared: “They like…know, right? Like, they have to know, right? I mean, they can’t possibly just not know, right?”
“Wow. Way to *not* read the room. Take a highly successful franchise fronted by international treasure Keanu Reeves and put this guy in it? Hard no. I won’t be watching,” @SunScot wrote.
However, not all the online reaction was negative, as many John Wick fans are still holding out hope the show will succeed.
“I don’t care about Mel’s politics, I just want The Continental’ to be kick-ass like the films,” @ThreatreofZon commented.
@NumberNineMan added: “Yes, thank you! Despite what the people who can’t forgive and forget might think, Mel Gibson is a brilliant actor!”
“Bold choice. Certainly will rub some people the wrong way. I’m looking forward to it,” @bfp1974 said.
The rest of the cast remains unconfirmed, with Keanu Reeves unlikely to make an appearance in the project.
Previously, McShane also said he wouldn’t make an appearance in the show, though he is open to voiceover work, depending on the style of the series.
Other recurring franchise cast members such as Lance Reddick, Halle Berry, and John Leguizamo are all also unlikely to return.
The Continental will premiere exclusively on Starz in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
