It’s been five years since James Gunn wrote and directed a Guardians of the Galaxy adventure and now his ragtag team of misfits return today in their very own Marvel Special Presentation. The 45 minute Christmas adventure, which was filmed alongside next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, has Drax and Mantis abduct Kevin Bacon as a present for Footloose fan Star-Lord. The one-off opens and closes with the 1970s-style animations inspired by the ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special, but did you spot the incredible cameo?

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, Luke Skywalker star Mark Hamill makes an uncredited appearance. The cameo takes place about 30 minutes in on Knowhere, when Kevin Bacon has done a runner. The Star Wars legend momentarily appears as a Ravager in a Christmas hat, swigging from a bottle of booze and hiccuping.

Aside from paying tribute to the not-so-fondly remembered Star Wars Holiday Special, it makes a lot of sense for the actor to show up.

Gunn has been publicly open about meeting up with Hamill, who’s a neighbour of his, which made fans wonder if he’d be showing up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

Hamill also tweeted in April last year, “I have a very bad feeling about this…” after Gunn tweeted about his Guardians Holiday Special and how “these things ALWAYS go well”.

Even if he doesn’t feature in Guardians Vol 3, the end credits scene for this special saw Rocket teasing how they’d need to make another one in the future after Groot messes up some Christmas lights. So hopefully we’ll see more of his character in the future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 hits cinemas on May 5, 2023.
