'Southern Charm': Why Did Thomas Ravenel Request Sole Custody of His Children From Kathryn Dennis?

The relationship between Thomas Ravenel and Kathryn Dennis has been…strained to say the least.

When they first came onto Southern Charm, Ravenel was enamored with Dennis and her fun, party girl lifestyle, while the rest of his friends were unsure about the relationship.

Over time, the two grew closer and eventually had two children together,  Kensie and Saint,  before things really blew up and they had an ugly break up.

Now, Ravenel is filing for sole custody of their children, according to The Blast.

Why is Ravenel applying for sole custody?

Neither Ravenel nor Dennis has the best record when it comes to drugs, but have both supposedly been clean in order to maintain custody of their children.

According to the documents, Dennis hasn’t kept up her end of the bargain, though. Ravenel claims that on June 13, he and Dennis both submitted blood, alcohol, urine, and hair drug tests.

The next day, “while in the possession of the children, Kathryn produced a urine test positive for marijuana, benzodiazepines and amphetamines,” Ravenel said in the documents.

The benzodiazepines and amphetamines were not the issue, as Dennis has a prescription for those, but the marijuana was not permisable to Ravenel.

Ravenel claimed that Dennis “disputes the veracity of the June 14, 2019 urine tests because her hair test was negative,” but he insisted that those tests could be unreliable because Dennis wears wigs and hair extensions and often dyes and bleaches her hair.

Apparently, Dennis did another urine test the next day and it was negative for marijuana.

“But the marijuana detected in the June 14, 2019 test could have been flushed out of her urine by that time,” the document read.

In addition to that, Ravenel claimed that Dennis has purchased fake urine before to past tests.

Is Ravenel going to gain sole custody?

While the former Southern Charm star has filed for sole custody, it may be a while before he gets it. So far, there has only been a temporary hearing regarding the matter.

“The parties had a long-scheduled temporary hearing in this matter, which took place on June 26, 2019,” Ravenel’s attorney told People.

“At the temporary hearing, Mr. Ravenel and other witnesses submitted affidavits to support the claims made by Mr. Ravenel against Ms. Dennis,” his attorney said. “The information discussed in The Blast article comes from Mr. Ravenel’s affidavit and various supporting documents submitted with it. These are on file with the Court.”

His legal team has “yet to receive and are awaiting a ruling by the judge on the issues argued at the temporary hearing.”

Has Dennis lost custody before?

If Dennis does lose custody of her children, this would not be the first time it has happened.

In 2016, she lost custody of the two children when she failed a drug test and had to go to rehab. After leaving rehab, she and Ravenel both had 50/50 custody.

In October of last year, she filed for primary custody of the children after her former lover was arrested for assault and battery.

In the documents, obtained by People, Dennis said that Ravenel used nannies full-time to care for the children and that he “has drunk alcohol to excess, mixed with prescription drugs, that has caused him to be impaired during periods of time in which he had custody of the children.”
