Saturday Night Live delayed: When will SNL return in the New Year?
Saturday Night Live, the iconic sketch show which welcomes a new host every week has been entertaining viewers since 1975. This weekend, NBC aired its final show of 2021 before it goes on a break during the festive holidays. However, the big finale didn’t exactly go according to plan thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
Due to last-minute measures taken by the network thanks to the continuous spread of the Omicron Covid variant in New York, some big changes had to be made.
Probably the biggest of them all was the absence of a live studio audience.
This also led to limiting the number of cast and crew members that would be on set for the production.
According to The New York Post, multiple SNL stars tested positive for Covid prior to the show starting so had to pull out.

Another guest who didn’t make it onto SNL was singer Charli XCX who decided against appearing on the hit end-of-year episode.
She stated that having a limited crew would prevent her from bringing “the most amazing musical performance to life”.
So instead of the usual buzzing studio, the show opened up with an empty stage, actor Tom Hanks and comedian Tina Fey who have both presented the show five times.
They welcomed host comedian and actor Paul Rudd with his very own 5-Timers coat, despite only being able to present half a show thanks to the changes.
When will SNL return in the New Year?
The last episode of 2021 aired on Saturday, December 19, on NBC.
But so far, there has been no talk of when Saturday Night Live will be returning for its next instalment.
Typically, the sketch show takes a few weeks off in between some episodes so this could be the case yet again.
However, there are a couple of factors that could mean a lengthy schedule shake-up.

First of all, there is the ongoing issue of the pandemic which caused plenty of disruption to the last episode of 2021.
This could continue into next year with the show not welcoming a live audience and potentially delaying its return as a result.
There is also the Winter Olympics which start in February to consider.
NBC usually covers the worldwide sporting event, changing its listings as a result.
So could fans of SNL have to wait until March for the classic sketch show’s return?
When SNL does make a comeback, there is also the question of who will be presenting.
Actor Rudd didn’t get the chance to host his fifth episode as planned so he could be welcomed back for a do-over.
