Quentin Tarantino Opens Up About Foot Fetish Accusations: ‘That’s Just Good Direction’

Quentin Tarantino is a legendary two-time Academy Award winner for 1994’s Pulp Fiction and 2012’s Django Unchained. However, 1992’s Reservoir Dogs started his immensely successful career. Tarantino has several signature markers that instantly identify his filmmaking brand, including the way he uses violence and how he frames the dialogue. But, his fans and peers have teased the filmmaker for including shots of women’s feet. Tarantino recently opened up about the accusation that he has a foot fetish.

Quentin Tarantino often includes foot shots in his movies

Tarantino’s foot content is well-documented across his filmography. There are no female characters in Reservoir Dogs, so there aren’t any foot shots. However, Pulp Fiction includes a barefoot Uma Thurman and a conversation about the sensual nature behind a foot massage. Meanwhile, Jackie Brown includes Bridget Fonda’s feet, who wears jewelry on them.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 has one of the most famous foot scenes with the “wiggle your big toe” bit. Meanwhile, Death Proof has Sydney Tamiia Poitier’s leg being chopped off and Kurt Russell licking Rosario Dawson’s feet. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood includes a lot of barefoot shots from Margot Robbie and Margaret Qualley.

Quentin Tarantino responds to the foot fetish accusations

GQ asked Tarantino in an interview about his supposed foot infatuation in his movies. He responded with a pause and a sigh of disappointment. The filmmaker likely already knows how much audiences have been teasing him about this particular topic.

However, Tarantino noted that the accusations don’t bother him much. “I don’t take it seriously,” he said. “There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies. That’s just good direction.” Tarantino is far from the first director to be asked the question about foot fetishism.

He continued: “Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it.”

Actor Brad Pitt previously teased the filmmaker for having a foot fetish in his acceptance speech for winning the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild. “I want to thank my co-stars,” Pitt said. “Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Margot Robbie’s feet, Margaret Qualley’s feet, Dakota Fanning’s feet. “Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA.”

The end of an era

Tarantino has been firmly sticking to his statement that his 10th movie will be his final one. However, there’s no indication of what this film could be. He’s expressed interest in making a horror movie before, but there’s no firm public notion on what his last movie will end up being.

Tarantino’s filmography has an abundance of women’s feet, so it’s pretty likely that his final movie won’t shy away from the focus on feet shots. Until then, he has been signed onto a two-book deal in 2020. The first was a novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The next will be inspired by film critic Pauline Kael.
