NCIS fans are already on tenterhooks at the possibility Agent Gibbs’ (played by Mark Harmon) time on the show could be coming to an end. It was reported Harmon would only make a limited appearance this season, upsetting viewers with the news. The reason for Gibbs’ potential exit has not been revealed, but a new scene from episode three has implied he could die this season.
Was Gibbs’ death foreshadowed in season 19 episode 3?
Gibbs is at a crossroads in season 19, both in the story and for the character as a whole.
So far this season, Gibbs has continued to track down the real serial killer, leading the team to Alaska.
Joined by Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), Gibbs will be venturing to Alaska in episode four.
However, Gibbs wanted to say a few goodbyes before leaving town, and one emotionally charged farewell has scared fans for the future of the character.
Before packing his bags, Gibbs visited the grave of Shannon and Kelly, but there was a third engraving waiting for him.
‘Leroy J’ is marked on the gravestone next to Shannon and Kelly, with the birthdate 1954 left alone.
There is a space to fill in the date of the death, an ominous foreshadowing of Gibbs’ potential fate.
It is already believed that Gibbs will only make a handful of appearances in season 19, worrying fans on how his absence will be explained.
So far, Gibbs has played a prominent role in season 19, and the promo for episode four shows him gearing up in Alaska.
Clearly, Gibbs isn’t leaving the show immediately, but it isn’t known how long he will be up in Alaska.
This could be the explanation for his lack of appearances throughout the season, rather than a permanent death.
It also seems unlikely CBS would kill off the character, as it has already explained how keen it is for Harmon to continue appearing in the show.
Speaking to Deadline earlier this year, CBS Entertainment chief Kelly Kahl stressed how keen the showrunners are to keep Harmon a part of the team.
Kahl explained: “Mark’s always been part of the show, Mark’s always going to be part of the show.
“In terms of his on-air appearances, we’re just going to have to see how it plays out going forward.”
This does leave the door open for Gibbs’ death, but fans can rest assured Gibbs will still be around through season 19.
Fans have also been sharing their concerns over Gibbs’ fate, with many of them taking to Twitter to comment on the moment.

@dd_umbach added: “People think he is going to die by the end of the show season because he was looking at his wife and daughter’s grave at the end of the episode. But they can’t do that.”
“Nope, I do not like the place this is heading. If he’s exiting, I do not want to see his character end like that. Rather see him retire n finally have love,” @blackies1 commented.
NCIS season 19 is airing Mondays at 9pm EST on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
