Midsomer Murders returned on Sunday night with another gripping mystery in need of solving. ITV viewers saw DCI John Barnaby (played by Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) investigate a mysterious death at Hulton Manor. However, fans were quick to point out the episode reminded them of another murder mystery series.

The Midsomer Murders episode followed the owners of Karras Games as they gathered for a murder mystery weekend.

However, the immersive experience ended up taking a puzzling twist when a real murder occurred.

As a storm raged outside Hulton Manor, one member of the group tumbled down the stairs and was killed after being impaled by a life-size Egyptian figure.

Watching the events unfold on-screen, several viewers noticed a number of cast members had also appeared on Jonathan Creek.

Caroline Quentin, who is well known for playing Maddie Magellan in Jonathan Creek featured in the Midsomer Murders episode, but she wasn’t the only familiar face.

Fellow Jonathan Creek stars Adrian Edmondson and Stuart Milligan also appeared in the episode.

Many fans spotted the cast connections between the two shows and took to Twitter to comment.

“If Jonathan Creek doesn’t pop up to solve tonight’s #MidsomerMurders I’ll be most upset. #RollOfHonour,” Michael Keane joked.

Rob Keeley wrote: “It’s a Jonathan Creek reunion tonight on #MidsomerMurders – Caroline Quentin, Ade Edmondson and Stuart Milligan (albeit gone already). Excellent! Wish they hadn’t wrecked the theme tune though.”

“Blimey. When’s jonathan creek gonna arrive? #midsomermurders,” Luna Loco commented.

Some fans also suggested the plot of the episode had similarities to Jonathan Creek too.

Emma Hollis said: “#midsomermurders I’ve missed you & this one is all a bit Jonathan Creek.”

Rachel O’Sullivan remarked: “This episode is a bit of a Jonathan Creek fest #MidsomerMurders.”

“Midsomer Murders might as well be Jonathan Creek tonight (am not complaining) #midsomermurders,” Kelly Rose added.

Meanwhile, others compared the instalment of Midsomer Murders to the long-running mystery series Poirot.

“Tonight’s Midsomer Murders, seems to be an interesting mish-mash of Jonathan Creek and Poirot. Whether it’s the cast, the plot or the music, i’m thoroughly enjoying it! #murdermystery #MidsomerMurders #Poirot #JonathanCreek,” Johnny Blair commented.

Darren Barton said: “#midsomermurders has just morphed into #poirot or #missmarple, now they are all stranded.”

“Liking how they embrace a theme now in #midsomermurders tonight is very murder mystery party plus the music so reminds me of #Poirot,” Melanie wrote.

Midsomer Murders is currently in its 22nd season, having captivated audiences for more than 20 years.

Midsomer Murders is available to stream on ITV Hub.
