Love Island’s Joe says he would have been axed by producers if he’d abused Lucie
Love Island star Joe Garratt says he would have been kicked out of villa if he really had abused Lucie.
The sandwich man, 22, was dumped from the villa this week and after his exit he was forced to confront allegations he had been "manipulative and controlling".
During an interview with Caroline Flack on Aftersun tonight, Joe denied the claims and insisted producers would have axed him if had behaved badly.
He said: "It's blown out of proportion.
"It hasn't been easy, it was pretty heartbreaking – and wasn't nice to see myself portrayed like that.
"But you know how the show works. If I was [abusive] I would have been kicked out.
"I wasn't like that all. I tried to to do what I thought was right".
The abuse claims surfaced shortly after another star, Sherif Lanre, was booted by producers for accidentally kicking Molly-Mae in the groin and calling it a "c**t punt"
Joe added that his parents were devastated by the way he was portrayed, adding: It was hard [for them]."
He went on to insist that if he really was controlling, he was have asked Lucie to leave the villa with him.
The sandwich seller added: "We wanted the summer of a lifetime.
"I wanted her to get the best experiences…
"If I was controlling in the slightest, I would have asked to her to come with me."
Before Joe got the boot, one of the issues that was raised was Lucie's close friendship with Tommy Fury.
Joe and Tommy had previously competed for her affections, but after Lucie chose the sandwich salesman to couple up with – she continued being close with Tommy.
Joe got irritated and asked her to tone it down a bit, prompting a furious reaction from trolls who called him "abusive" for meddling.
However, Joe is adamant he did nothing wrong and refuses to apologise for his actions.
