Love Island’s Joe Garratt reveals mum’s secret breast cancer battle in heartbreaking interview

Love Island star Joe Garratt has revealed his mum has been battling breast cancer.

The 22 year old, who was dumped from the villa last week, appeared on This Morning to discuss some of the backlash he has faced since he left the ITV2 match-making show.

The reality star was branded “controlling” by critics after he told Lucie he wanted her to be more friendly with the girls, rather than be so close with Tommy Fury.

After he told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that paparazzi had been waiting outside his house while he was away, he emotionally revealed his mum had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the year.

Phillip discussed Joe's mum's battle on air, saying: "Your mum is currently going through radiotherapy, isn't she?"

Joe revealed: "Yeah, she was diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago.

"There was times where she was going out for radio and coming out, and there would be paparazzi outside the door.

"It wasn't easy that I wasn't there."

His appearance comes after he broke his silence with an honest interview about his romance with Lucie.

Revealing he is “gutted” by the way his behaviour came across, he insists that he did not “manipulate or abuse” the surfer.

Following a number of complaints, and reports that he has been hiding in a safehouse following the backlash over his “controlling behaviour”, the sandwich maker has now set the record straight.

Speaking to The Sun, Joe exclaimed: “I didn’t manipulate or abuse her. I am gutted that it has been perceived in that way because it wasn’t like that at all.

"I always had Lucie’s best interests at heart and I promise you I would do everything and anything to help her because she had a hard time in there and didn’t get on with the girls.

“I was trying to help her and make her experience as amazing as possible. I thought I did right.”
