John Cleese takes swipe at daughters for 'turning out like their mother'

John Cleese has appeared to take a swipe at his two children, declaring children were ‘responsible for most of the misery of the world’.

The Monty Python star, 79, has two grown daughters, Cynthia, 48, and Camilla, 35, from previous marriages, but told Lorraine he was happy now with cats with wife number four.

However, speaking to Lorraine Kelly about parenthood, John joked: ‘That’s the thing about having children, they are responsible for most of the misery of the world.

‘You worry yourself sick about them, they cost a fortune and then they turn out like their mothers…’

‘We do all this rude stuff about children on the stage, it’s always the older people who are smiling and nodding,’ he continued.

The dad-of-two then added that it was mainly out of worry, and stated: ‘It’s ridiculous isn’t it – you never stop worrying about them.’

John has sparked controversy over the year for moving to the Caribbean with wife Jennifer Wade, and declaring that London ‘is not an English city anymore’ – which he later defended saying that ‘race is a social construct’.

However, he still has some basis in the UK – because of his cats.

Talking about his marriage and life in the Caribbean, John explained he spends most of his time overseas but has a base in the UK because of their cats.

‘We’ve burdened ourselves with cats instead of children,’ he said. ‘Which is good because you don’t have to spend a lot of money on education and when they grow up they don’t blame you for anything, so I’d rather have cats.

‘But the trouble with cats is, home is where the cats are. We can’t bring them out to the Caribbean yet. The big one is 25 pounds. When my wife tries to pick him up, she disappears behind him.’

He also added that he ‘finally got it right’ with wife number four, Jennifer, adding that ‘it helps if you marry someone you really like’.

The comedian was previously married to Fawlty Towers co-star Connie Booth from 1968-1978, Rollerball actress Barbara Trentham from 1981-1990, and talk show host Alyce Eichelberger from 1992-2008.

Jennifer and John tied the knot in 2012.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 8.30am on ITV.
