Homes Under the Hammer's Martin Roberts left stunned by guests' reaction to 'mouldy' and 'rotten' property | The Sun

A HOMES Under the Hammer couple caught Martin Roberts off guard after they wished a property covered in mould was ‘worse’.

TV favourite Martin was flabbergasted when the homeowners made the shocking revelation in a classic episode of the BBC show.

Martin was viewing the property which was in total need of renovation after being left covered in damp and rotting walls and ceilings.

The new owners, Richard and his wife Hannah, purchased the two-bedroom house for £42,000 and they spoke to Martin about their reasoning behind the interesting purchase.

Richard said: “It's local, so all our properties are within 10 miles of home."

Martin asked further: "Anything else you particularly look for when you're buying stuff?"

Richard bluntly confirmed that he was in it to make a profit, saying: "So this one will give us hopefully a double-digit return, around about nine and a half percent to ten per cent, we hope."

Inspecting the property and its flaws, Martin questioned the pair on their renovation plans.

He asked: "What about this place? What are you going to do to it?"

Richard replied: “So obviously there's a lot of black mould, a lot of condensation long damp here, so, the first thing is to find out where that's coming from. Scaffolding goes up tomorrow, we'll assess the roof.”

Richard continued to list the extensive renovations that would be needed in order for the property to be marketable simply stating ‘it’s a big project’.

Richard has previous property experience and has completed a number of renovation projects in the past.

After admitting plans to spend £12,000 on the property, TV presenter Martin was left visibly shocked upon hearing Richard’s next remark that he wished the property was ‘worse’.

Martin asked: “A little bit more than you usually spend? Perhaps a little bit more to do on this one?"

Richard said: “We do like them [the properties] a little bit worse than this.”

Martin was taken aback as he exclaimed in disbelief: “Worse?”

Further expressing his confusion, Martin asked “Explain that?”

Despite the shocking admission, Richard appeared to have a method behind his madness insisting: “If we can take it back to the bare walls, that's better for us because of the long-term plan to keep these properties.”

He added: "So if we take it back to the bare wall, we know exactly what's gone into the property.”
