AMC viewers were devastated when former sheriff Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) left The Walking Dead in 2018. However, the popular spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead could be the one to explore what happened after Rick’s “death” as showrunner Scott M Gimple teased that a future storyline for the spin-off could follow the mysterious group that helicoptered the zombie hunter to safety.
After his shocking departure from The Walking Dead in season nine, audiences were unsatisfied with the hero’s dramatic departure.
Fans of the zombie franchise were later promised three feature-length films that would cover what happened to Rick after he was airlifted to safety by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh).
With COVID-19 delaying production on the films, it looks like Fear the Walking Dead could be the one to fully explore the aftermath of his disappearance.
Speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con panel, showrunner Scott M Gimple teased that the group who rescued Rick, the CRM, will have a recurrent storyline in the spin-off series.
Gimple promised fans would receive new intel on CRM but that the spin-off wouldn’t become a Rick-centric show as a result.
He said: “Each show has a different piece of the puzzle, but those pieces of the puzzle… aren’t just plots.
“They are personal stories for the characters that do advance aspects of the greater mythology,” Gimple explained.
He added: “But the CRM stuff in Fear [The Walking Dead] really has to do with a couple of characters very deeply.
“Their situation bleeds out to other characters,” the showrunner continued.
The Walking Dead has already briefly explored the characters within the CRM, but two familiar faces will be returning to the spin-off.
CRM pilot Isabelle (Sydney Lemmon) and her lover Al (Maggie Grace) will both be returning to Fear the Walking Dead.
With the group being touched upon once again in more detail, will Rick’s family and friends finally discover that he is alive?
In the ninth season episode titled What Comes After, Rick was last seen by his partner Michonne (Danai Gurira) and his friends moments after he blew up a bridge to get them to safety.
His family and friends presumed he’d died in the blast but viewers last saw Rick being airlifted to parts unknown with his family believing he had died in the horrific explosion.
The announced films are expected to follow Rick after the events of What Comes After.
Fans have long been speculating whether the former sheriff would ever see his family or friends again, and how the films will tie into the popular series.
Now, it seems that Fear the Walking Dead could be the first to reveal some sought after secrets of his disappearance, but Gimple remained tight-lipped about any further details.
The effects of discovering that Rick is alive will have major consequences on the characters in both series.
Gimple has promised that, while questions may not always be answered, the CRM storyline is “part of a personal and emotional story on this show”.
“It just so happens, though, that it does give other info about the greater world [that our survivors] inhabit,” he added, teasing that Rick’s presence will not be leaving either series anytime soon.
Fear The Walking Dead season 7 will be released on October 17 on AMC in the US.
The final season of The Walking Dead will be released on August 22 on AMC in the US.
