Liam Cavanagh (played by Johnny McPherson) is understandably not looking forward to his first Christmas without daughter Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger) in Emmerdale. His wife Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) has been trying to help him move forward but will he find comfort in colleague Wendy Posner (Susan Cookson) instead?

In Wednesday’s instalment of the ITV soap, Liam made it clear to Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) he wasn’t in the festive spirit.

Turning her attention to Leyla, Meena asked: “Please tell him to come to surgery drinks later on.”

“I am actually here,” the doctor quipped and Meena hit back: “Yes but you’re not listening.

“If you don’t come it’s just me, Wendy and my duller much older sister.”

When Meena left, Leyla encouraged Liam to allow himself to have a good time.

“Why does everyone have to be so darn cheerful?” Liam questioned.

“We always knew this time of year was going to be hard and I know we haven’t decided yet but I do think we should put up the decorations,” she replied.

“Little twinkly lights, aren’t we happy having a jolly twinkly time?” Liam quipped.

“I’m sorry you’re right I just don’t know how to be [happy],” he added.

“I think you should go to the Christmas party,” Leyla urged.

Later, Liam was seen enjoying himself at The Woolpack with Wendy and Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker).

“Another round?” Liam asked Wendy who replied: “Oh no I’m a bit tipsy already. I’m so glad to see you out.”

The doctor has struggled to move on following the tragic death of his daughter.

Leyla has repeatedly tried to help him but the grieving father often pushes his wife away.

Will he find comfort in the arms of his colleague who has lost a child of her own?

In the episode, Wendy and Liam leave The Woolpack together and head home.

“I should not have had one for the road and those cocktails you got us,” Wendy commented.

Liam replied: “Completely lethal I can’t feel my legs.”

It has been a long time since Liam enjoyed himself and had a good night.

Will he feel able to open up to Wendy who lost her son Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie) in 2019?

The colleagues went their separate ways but it wasn’t long before Meena spotted an inebriated Liam.

He has no idea Meena is responsible for the death of his daughter and the doctor is likely in danger.

However, with Leyla waiting at home for Liam it might not be too long before Meena’s forced to let the doctor go to avoid suspicion.

Emmerdale airs on ITV on weekdays at 7am.
