Denise (played by Diane Parish) will take son Raymond to church in EastEnders for Christmas Day as she leaves the rest of the family at home to cook the turkey. But she’s in for a surprise as Raymond’s church welcome a special guest – Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet). Denise will be terrified as she fears Lucas has returned to take revenge after he has spent time locked up in prison. She’s even more disturbed when she finds out Lucas and her daughter Chelsea (Zaraah Abrahams) have been in contact.

Unsurprisingly, Denise feels betrayed by Chelsea for keeping her communication with Lucas a secret.

However, her daughter also feels betrayed as she learns Denise has taken custody of Raymond, and never told her.

Furious her mother has kept important details secret, could Chelsea take revenge on her mother with the help of Lucas?

Teasing what is to come, Zaraah teased: “She feels a little bit betrayed because she has kept in contact with her mum throughout the years, even while she’s been working away.

“Also I feel like Chelsea’s always painted as the bad one in the family and so for her mum to keep such a secret when they paint themselves as such angels to her, she does feel a little bit put out.”

Could Chelsea work hard to ensure her mum loses custody of Raymond as revenge?

Zaraah teased there will be fireworks between Denise and Chelsea as her character returns expecting her mum to understand her decision to reunite with Lucas.

“I think Denise would love it if Chelsea came back as the loving doting daughter,” the actress explained.

“But Chelsea’s not. So it is fiery and explosive – but there are warm moments there as well.

“There’s a part of Chelsea where she can’t help being selfish.

“And because she is selfish it means that she hurts the people closest to her.

“Which she is sorry about but she still needs to do what she needs to do.”

Furthermore, Zaraah teased Chelsea has a few of her dad’s traits so viewers shouldn’t be surprised if she causes trouble and torment for Denise.

Explaining her decision to reunite with Lucas, Zaraah commented: “She is wanting to forgive him for all that he’s done and she believes that he has changed.

“Whether he has or not – we shall see. I think Chelsea might have a few of her dads traits. They’re not the duo you expect..”

But it’s not just Chelsea who feels betrayed. Denise will be heartbroken to see Chelsea kept her involvement with Lucas a secret.

“She feels shocked and betrayed and then worries for Chelsea and what she’s doing,” actress Diane explained.

“She should be really thrilled and happy to see her daughter, who she hasn’t seen on Christmas Day in a while, so that is a lovely thing but she shouldn’t have been standing next to her murdering father.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see why Lucas is back on the Square and why Chelsea was so quick to forgive him.

EastEnders continues December 26 on BBC One.
