Fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Maggie Smith’s Dowager Violet Crawley is back in the trailer for the sequel movie. The new Downton Abbey 2 trailer sees her sit down her family to share quite the secret. Lord Grantham’s mother says: “Years ago, before you were born, I met a man.”

The Dowager continued: “And now I’ve come into possession of a villa in the south of France.”

Interestingly, the beginning of the trailer sees some of the cast in summer wear in this French home.

And there, to his absolute surprise, Carson the Butler discovers a miniature portrait of Lady Violet when she was young in the Victorian period.

Presumably then, Maggie’s character has been left this house by an old flame from years ago.

Whatever the case, it looks like the Crawleys will be heading to France at some point in the movie.

But considering that the Dowager doesn’t feature in the wedding photo at the second marriage of Tom Branson, perhaps she’s not long for the world.

After all, fans will remember that the first Downton Abbey movie concluded with Lady Violet sharing with her granddaughter Lady Mary that she is terminally ill.

Downton Abbey: A New Era hits UK cinemas on March 18, 2021.
