An all-new Channel 5 documentary, explored the heartbreaking personal life of renowned comedian and actor John le Mesurier. Titled ‘Dad’s Army: Secret Lives and Scandal,’ fans got to hear the truth about his second marriage to Joan as she proclaimed her innocence.
As one of the seven breakout stars from the British sitcom, Dad’s Army, actor John le Mesurie’s personal life quickly became public interest.
Although he became a success for his beloved character, Sergeant Arthur Wilson – sadly, behind the scenes, John led a turbulent life.
His string of relationships was often discussed publicly and most notably his marriage to Carry On actress Hattie Jacque.
In the documentary, his wife Joan opened up about their marriage and the horrible treatment she received from fans who labelled her a homewrecker.

The documentary explained after John and Hattie’s divorce he took on the title of ‘the adulterer’ to protect Hattie’s career and image.
Despite this, once he became involved with Joan, the public blamed her for their divorce and claimed it was her fault.
Speaking of the experience, Joan explained: “I took the blame for Hattie’s marriage, but I didn’t take him away – it was the other way around.”
Joan and John got married in 1966, a year after his divorce and the two stayed together until his death, even through her affair with Tony Hancock.
The documentary revealed, during John’s marriage to Hattie, she started a relationship with chauffeur John Schofield, behind her husband’s back.
As well as an interview with Joan, the documentary included interviews with his other friends and family members.
This included the author of the novel ‘Dad’s Army: The Story of a Classic Television Show,’ Graham McCann who unveiled John’s reaction to the affair.
He shared: “John Le Mesurier was a very stoical man when he discovered she was having an affair with a younger, very handsome man.
“He just tried to put up with it. There were no tantrums, there were no rows, no clashes. He just got on with his work and left her to get on with hers.”
John and Hattie’s son Robin, was also interviewed and opened up about the unconventional family dynamics.
He revealed: “It was a great relationship until she found somebody else who became a second father to us and we all lived under the same roof.
“Some people can’t understand how that could work but it did somehow,” Robin added.
Although he planned to continue living this way, John found love again and the public was upset as Joan was in fact Hattie’s close friend.
Therefore, labelling her a homewrecker, when in fact it was Hattie who cheated on the actor, however, this wasn’t public knowledge as John took all the blame.
Joan continued: “I took the blame for Hattie’s marriage, I had taken John away from his family.
“But it was not true I was very good friends with her but I didn’t take him away from her it was the other way around,” the 90-year-old concluded.
