Coronation Street's Shelley King takes on EastEnders Jessica Plummer for best actress gong at Inside Soap awards 2020

CORONATION Street star Shelley King has been shortlisted for Best Actress at the Inside Soap Awards for her harrowing performance as Yasmeen Metcalfe in the soap’s coercive control storyline.

But the Sun Online can exclusively reveal that Shelley, 65, faces tough competition from EastEnders star Jessica Plummer, Emmerdale actress Natalie J Robb and Hollyoaks hottie Jennifer Metcalfe.

Jessica, 28, played Chantelle Atkins in the BBC soap before her character met a tragic end back when abusive husband Gray pushed her onto an upturned knife in the dishwasher as she tried to leave him. He then watched her slowly die.

While Moira Dingle actress Natalie J Robb, 45, has had another big year in the Dales following her split from husband Cain, and the arrival of her troublesome brother Mackenzie Boyd.

Jen, 37, who has played saucy minx Mercedes McQueen in the Channel 4 soap for the last 12 years, has once again been at the centre of some of Hollyoaks’ biggest storylines.

Last month the Channel 4 soap celebrated its 25th anniversary and amid all the mystery of the McQueen blackmail drama Mercedes announced that she was pregnant.

The Inside Soap Awards will be hosting a virtual event on Monday 23rd November after being forced to cancel their annual glitzy London bash because of COVID.

A soap source said: “The Best Actress category is always one of the most fiercely fought on the night, and this year is no different.

“The final four have all been involved in some of soaps biggest storylines over the last 12 months, so any of them could win it."

Speaking about this year’s awards, Editor of Inside Soap magazine, Steven Murphy said: “In a year where people have had to miss out on a lot of big events, we didn’t want the Inside Soap Awards to be one of them.

“The soaps have been a constant for people over lockdown – something familiar and comforting – so it’s great to be able to reward them for their hard work.

“The shortlist really shows the talent in our soaps at the moment, and we can’t wait to reveal the winners on Monday 23rd November at the virtual Inside Soap Awards.”

Soap fans will be able to find out who else has made the shortlists, which also includes Best Actor, Best Newcomer, Best Partnership, Best Family, and the big one, Best Soap, in the new issue of Inside Soap Magazine, out on Tuesday.

And can watch all the action as the winners are announced during a special virtual event at 9pm on Monday 23rd November on the Inside Soap Facebook page and YouTube channel at 9.00pm.
