Coronation Street’s Gemma Winter (Dolly Rose Campbell) and Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) have had a tough few years since the arrival of their quadruplets in 2019. The couple’s relationship has survived several challenges, but could soon be at a breaking point. In Wednesday night’s instalments of the ITV soap, viewers saw Freda Burgess (Ali Briggs) hold Aled hostage in an attempt to get through to his parents about the importance of sign language and the deaf community. As Gemma discovers Chesney no longer wants to continue learning British Sign Language (BSL) the pair clash. Could Gemma end up giving Chesney an ultimatum if he doesn’t take Aled’s deafness more seriously?
On Monday night’s episode, a distraught Gemma told Freda: “We’re proud of all the kids and I’m not going to stop learning BSL.”
“And his brothers and his sisters they won’t stop either, and my mum and Chesney they’ll carry on too,” she insisted.
As Chesney arrived at the scene he asked: “What’s going on? Aled’s missed his operation and you’re still stood here arguing with Freda.”
He was referencing Aled’s operation to get a cochlear implant, which he missed because Freda was holding him hostage.
A tearful Gemma yelled: “Look, will you just tell her that you’re going to carry on learning BSL?
“Can you tell her that I want Aled?” she exclaimed.
“She’s keeping our son hostage to make us do a night class? Seriously?” Chesney asked.
Later on, as a police car pulled up, Gemma turned to her mother in outrage and asked: “Have you phoned the police?”
Chesney said: “No I phoned them. If our Aled gets bumped down the waiting list she’ll have me to answer to.
“He’s falling behind and every week matters,” he commented.
After the parents managed to get Aled back from Freda, Chesney shook his head and remarked: “If she thinks she’s ever seeing him again.”
“Oh don’t be like that. I think he might need her,” Gemma replied.
Chesney said: “She kidnapped him, she’s hardly godmother material.”
However, Gemma made it clear she wished Chesney had been there sooner to hear what Freda was trying to tell them about the importance of BSL and the Deaf community.
If Chesney does decide to give up learning sign language once Aled has a cochlear implant it could cause a rift between him and Gemma.
The couple already seems to have vastly different approaches to their son’s deafness.
If Chesney fails to take the issue seriously, Gemma may end up giving him an ultimatum.
The mother could threaten to cut Chesney out of her and the children’s lives if he doesn’t make changes.
Will Gemma end up going to such extreme lengths to get Chesney taking sign language more seriously?
This isn’t the first time the couple has had to overcome a hurdle in their relationship.
Back in 2019 once Gemma gave birth she began suffering from postnatal depression, putting pressure on her relationship with Chesney.
The new mum was instantly worn out looking after newborns Aled, Bryn, Carys, and Llio, as well as Chesney’s son Joseph.
However, with the support of Chesney, her mother Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove), and her brother Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), Gemma made it through the difficult time.
But, will Chesney and Gemma be able to get through the current strain on their relationship?
Coronation Street continues at 7:30 pm on ITV.
