'Big Bang Theory' Star Jim Parsons Describes His First Date With Husband Todd Spiewak and It's Adorable
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons married his boyfriend, Todd Spiewak, in 2017. That was 15 years after they met in 2002. Parsons and Spiewak met on a blind date, so their success story is a ringing endorsement of blind dates. Parsons telling the story of their first date is all kinds of adorable.
Parsons was a guest on the HFPA In Conversation podcast on Sept. 23 to promote his Netflix film The Boys in the Band. He described the night he met Spiewak.
Before ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak’s friends set them up
Parsons thinks his blind date with Spiewak was successful because both had mutual friends set them up.
“Here’s what I recommend about blind dates,” Parsons said. “This was a blind date set up by two friends of ours, one that was very close to me, Tammy who I went to grad school with, and [Spiewak’s] boss. They happened to be friends. This sounds so whatever, but they each had a gay friend who was looking for somebody to go on dates with. That’s how it happened.”
They also went out as a group to be safe.
“We all met, it wasn’t just the two of them,” Parsons said. “We went out with a few other people, we went to a pool hall and then we went to a karaoke place.”
When Jim Parsons hit it off with Todd Spiewak, they stayed out together
The group date was so well, Spiewak didn’t want to say goodnight to Parsons just yet. Fortunately, he had more plans that night.
“And then, Todd had a very close friends’ birthday party at a club in another part of town,” Parsons said. “We were having so much fun he was like, ‘I mean, if you want to go, you can go.’ So by the end of the night, the two of us were on our own without them. My blind date success story is a raving success for myself. But I have always felt a lot of credit was due to the fact that we were set up by people who were both smart, loving people who knew us. That helped.”
Todd Spiewak changed Jim Parsons’ life
Parsons reflected on the difference between his life before Spiewak and since. It was more than just having a boyfriend and now husband.
“It’s hard to consciously know, and I would imagine anybody in a long-term relationship feels this or understands it,” Parsons said. “It’s hard to pinpoint what changes happened in my life because of him. Being happy, which I was once we were together and suddenly I had somebody, that obviously changed things for me. Just waking up more optimistically every day which, as an unemployed actor in New York was a really good advantage to have to start each day. And then it’s been 18 years now that we’ve been together.”
