Sunday’s episode of The Andrew Marr Show, saw the BBC host discussing the rules that the EU has imposed on Britons travelling between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It comes as the UK and European Union are locked in a dispute over trading relationships in Northern Ireland. Marr invited Northern Irish politician Edwin Poots and Maroš Šefčovič, the Vice-President of the European Commission, on to the programme to share their thoughts about the dispute.

However, the segment sparked a lot of reaction from viewers, and while some accused the presenter of giving Poots an “easy ride”, others switched channels because of his “shameful” grilling of Šefčovič.

One viewer tweeted: “Has Andrew Marr completely lost his mind this morning? This is a ridiculous interview with the commissioner.”

Another raged: “Andrew Marr’s questions  EU for problems with NI Protocol negotiations, but Maroš Šefčovič valiantly holds his corner despite constant interruptions and lack of interest in answers that contradict Marr’s assertions. Time to change the channel.”

A third simply penned: “This shameful, turning over.”

“Shocking from Andrew Marr this morning,” a fourth tweeted. “The easy ride he has given the leader of Northern Ireland. Does he have to do this to keep his job at the BBC? It seems the UK has no responsibility at all for NI.”

A fifth penned: “Poots gets an easy ride threatening violence by Andrew Marr yet Šefčovič getting hauled over the coals for an agreement signed by both EU and U.K. government, supported by DUP.

“European Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič absolutely schooling Andrew Marr on NI protocol and Good Friday Agreement,” a sixth viewer commented. “Truly embarrassing for Marr.”

“This is a staggeringly ignorant and biased interview from Andrew Marr,” another said while one added: “Andrew Marr is doing a really bad job as a government mouthpiece trying to blame Westminster’s NI protocol on the EU.”

A ninth viewer raged: “Shameful interviewing by Andrew Marr of Maros Sefcovic. Not even listening to the answers but continuing with the Poots line regardless.”
