Jonnie Irwin has helped many couples find their dream home in warmer climates on the Channel 4 programme. On Tuesday’s episode, the presenter showed Sam and Elaine, from Bolton, his top picks of traditional French holiday homes. And one property, in particular, left Elaine shedding “tears of joy”.
The classic episode saw Sam and Elaine explore scenic French stone properties with country kitchens, spacious bedrooms, and tranquil outdoor spaces.
Their budget for their holiday home was £225,000, and Jonnie managed to hunt down a selection of properties within that figure.
When it came to the third property, Jonnie decided to take the couple on a 20-minute drive out of Carcassonne to a rural chalet.
To his surprise, Elaine burst into tears of joy when the trio pulled up outside the property.

As they stood by the chalet in amazement, Jonnie asked Elaine: “Are you crying?”
Her husband Sam said Elaine often cries at weddings, funerals, and everything – but he thought this was the right emotion to have about the property.
Jonnie told the couple the three-bedroom chalet was on the market for £219,000, which was well within their budget.
Elaine replied: “You are joking aren’t you? I thought this would be at the top end of our budget.”
They went on to have a good look inside the chalet, and Elaine suddenly became overwhelmed with emotion again.
A tearful Elaine said: “I’m sorry I can’t believe I am [crying], it’s just lovely. I really like it.
“I can just see us putting stuff in here. I wouldn’t normally go as modern as that fireplace, but you could certainly work with it.
The property itself was built back in the 1980s, Jonnie explained to the couple.

Sam was also a big fan of how the chalet had lots of open space so he would be able to “talk to everybody”.
The couple then toured the rest of the house, including its double bedrooms.
Reflecting on the property, Elaine said: “This has more or less everything we wanted. I think you [Jonnie] will struggle to find something better in my eyes so it will be interesting to see what else.”
Elaine and Sam were taken around two more properties, but it was evident their hearts were with the chalet.

Jonnie said: “When I see a property that makes owners so emotional they burst into tears, it’s going to be hard to beat.”
Sam and Elaine said the chalet was their favourite contender, but they decided to go back to the tiny village it’s located in for a couple of days to get a taste for the area.
Later on, Sam and Elaine put in a “cheeky” offer for the chalet. Their first offer was declined so they put in another, and the episode ended with Jonnie explaining the pair were negotiating with the owner.
A Place in The Sun airs on Channel 4 weekdays at 4pm.
