Since One Direction split up in 2015 each of the band members have been asked endlessly about their time in the iconic group. Last year Liam spoke candidly about the end of the band while reminiscing on working with his former pals. During the conversation, he heaped on the praise for Zayn Malik.
Zayn quit the band at the beginning of 2015 while they were on a world tour.
The singer cited “stress” as the reason for his exit, prompting the band to continue on without him for almost an entire year, before splitting up as well.
A year to the day after Zayn left, he released his solo debut album, Mind of Mine.
This wasn’t a complete surprise to Liam, as he praised Zayn’s skills.
Speaking to GQ in 2019, Liam said: “For Zayn, he loves music and he’s an amazing talent.
“He genuinely was the best singer in One Direction, hand on heart, out of all of us.”
He went on to talk about Zayn’s incredible popularity on streaming sites.
The 27-year-old said: “His streaming numbers are ridiculous but I do think he misses out on the performance side a bit, you know. He can’t seem to get past that part.”
Liam Payne reveals 'there's more to come from One Direction'
After speaking about Zayn’s career post-One Direction, Liam was keen to clear the air about the controversial exit from the band.
In doing so, Liam said he reached out to Zayn after he quit One Direction.
He said: “I didn’t want him to feel like he was going through this all alone in some ways, or that we were all out to get him.
“We’re the only people who know what you’re going through. The only five people who know what you are going through were all in a room together once.”
Liam added: “And you left – fair enough – but you don’t want anyone going through such evils for no reason.”
He went on to say: “But it got to a point with me where I wouldn’t know where to begin with Zayn.
“I hope he has good people around him, but I don’t at this stage think it’s anything the rest of us can solve.”
Liam may be around Zayn himself in the coming months as rumour has it the band will be reuniting this year.
Leading bookmaker Ladbrokes has 1/3 odds on the band reuniting before the end of 2021.
This is one of the best odds the band has had, so Directioners will no doubt be getting excited by the notion.
The bookies’ Alex Apati said: “Directioners are looking for Little Things to suggest the band may soon be getting back together and it’s great news for fans as the odds suggest a reunion could well be on the cards before the year is out.”
