One Direction: Are One Direction members still friends? Why did they split up?
One Direction was made up of five young lads who met on The X Factor: Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. The boys were thrust together by the show’s producers, and while their incredible run of music did them well for a time, it did not last for very long. They have been working separately for some time, with reports of arguments plaguing them – but are they still friends?
One Direction came third in The X Factor, proving their talent as a band with every round.
The boys went on to conquer the world with their music, sparking a Beatlesmania-style reaction in their female fans.
However, it was not to last long, as Zayn left the band in 2015 after a difficult period.
Despite 1D having earned millions of followers and a number of hit songs, Zayn chose to go solo with his own work, while the foursome carried on.
This was only until 2016, however, when the boys declared they were going on an indefinite hiatus, and each singer has now released solo material to differing levels of success.
In terms of why the band broke up, there has been a number of reasons suggested, with many focusing on how the boys wanted to go off and do their own work.
As they started out as individuals on The X Factor, perhaps their goal was, after reaching stardom as a band, to go their own ways afterwards.
As for Zayn’s departure, some, including Liam himself, suggested he left due to struggles performing in front of large audiences, which he has opened up on himself since leaving.
On the band’s 10th anniversary, Harry posted on Twitter: “I’ve been struggling to put into words how grateful I am for everything that’s happened over the last ten years.
“I’ve seen things and places that I’d only ever dreamt of when I was growing up.
“And for that, I will be forever thankful. I just can’t believe it’s been ten years.
“Thank you to our crew, our team, and everyone else who helped us along the way. To all the fans, I love you, and I thank you with all my heart.
“You did it all, and you changed everything.
“And finally, to the boys, I love you so much, and I couldn’t be prouder of everything we achieved together. Here’s to ten. H”
His work has been the best performing in his solo efforts, but the final comment he made clearly shows how there is an important bond between the group.
As well as this, ahead of their anniversary, Niall and Liam did an Instagram Live where they had a conversation, admitting that despite having ‘nothing to do’ in lockdown, the band struggles to all meet up.
The group tend to meet up in pairs, with various Instagram pictures suggesting the three who meet up the most are Niall, Liam and Louis.
In 2016, when Louis’ mother died, it was three of the members who came to support him: all but Zayn.
In September 2017, various of the members attended each other’s concerts, with Niall going to see Harry, and Louis going to see Niall.
As well as this, when Louis was a guest judge on The X Factor, he brought his friend Liam to support him in choosing contestants.
While four of the members meet up a great deal, it is clear Zayn is out of the picture, choosing to focus on his life with supermodel Gigi Hadid.
