Countdown star Susie Dent and her husband Paul Atkins "did all they could" to make their marriage work, but ultimately ended their relationship after nearly 20 years of marriage.

Despite many efforts to try and save their relationship, the pair parted ways but remain amicable and will continue to put their young daughters first.

The couple are reportedly working on the best arrangement possible for their two daughters, Lucy, 17, and Thea, nine.

A friend of the couple told The Sun that they had done all they could prior to their split and are currently trying to make the most of a "heartbreaking scenario".

They said: "Obviously Susie and Paul did all they could to make things work, but decided in the end to part ways."

The sources added that no other parties were involved in the split.

Susie is yet to speak about the reported relationship breakdown herself and has remained quiet on Instagram for a fortnight, but has continued tweeting her famous word of the day on Twitter.

The 56-year-old first appeared on Countdown when it was hosted by Richard Whitely – and now Anne Robinson has taken over as the new host.

Susie has boasted an impressive career elsewhere, writing several books on the English language and releasing a podcast with Gyles Brandreth called Something Rhymes With Purple.

She also appears on the 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown version of the show, hosted by Jimmy Carr.

While Susie is often seen on TV, she keeps her private life to herself, with her social media mostly seeing her share words to her followers.

She has said that she has always been a worrier with a constant fear of being judged, which encouraged her to keep things to herself.

Previously speaking on her work, she said: "My work, my love of words, became my refuge, both when I was working on bilingual dictionaries for Oxford University Press and then via my involvement with Countdown — and now Catsdown, as I call it.

"I know what I'm doing which makes me feel safe and in charge of myself."

Susie Dent is expected to be back on Countdown with Anne Robinson and Rachel Riley next week on Channel 4.
