My grandson has started self-harming and he has become very withdrawn
DEAR DEIDRE: MY grandson has started self-harming. I found blood on his clothes and he has become very withdrawn.
He was fine until his girlfriend of six months split up with him and started seeing another boy in their group just before Christmas.

My grandson is only 13. I am 61 and live with him and his mum, my daughter.
I keep trying to tell him he will meet someone else and to try not to dwell on this girl.
But he just replies: “You wouldn’t understand.”
His mum keeps saying it’s only a phase but it’s been going on for three months now and I’m worried. How can we help him?
DEIDRE SAYS: You are right, you do need to get him help. His heartbreak will feel so much more overwhelming now as there is little to distract him from his break-up.
You and his mum should keep reassuring him he will move on.
Ask your daughter to talk to his doctor. She can ring the YoungMinds Parents Helpline too.
It will understand how to support you. Contact it at (youngminds.org.uk 0808 802 5544).
