My abusive ex-girlfriend left me a suicidal stammering wreck

DEAR DEIDRE: I DIDN’T realise I was in an abusive relationship until I spoke to family and friends about it.

I’m a 32-year-old man and was with my girlfriend for almost ten years. She’s 30.

The last two were the worst years of my life. I felt suicidal.

It started with pushing and shoving whenever I made a mistake, but then it got worse.

She threw books, plates and shoes at me and even kicked me a couple of times.

I used to be confident but now struggle to make eye contact and sometimes can’t get my words out. It’s as if I’ve developed a stammer.
