Meghan Markle on Ellen Show is ‘smart move for brand Meghan – she’s here to stay’, says expert

Meghan Markle will make her second major TV appearance in America tonight, chatting with good pal Ellen DeGeneres on her famous chat show.

The Duchess, who’s snubbed Christmas with the Queen, is seen in a sneak peek clip discussing her early struggles as an actress and happy home life with Prince Harry, Archie and Lilibet.

Popular Culture Expert Nick Ede says Meghan’s appearance will rile British viewers, but it’s a big boost for ‘brand Meghan’.

Nick told OK!: “The UK just won’t let her get away with anything. Brits will see this as a PR stunt, but she’s a Hollywood celebrity – she’s entitled to do a celebrity interview.

“This is about brand Meghan, not her past or her husband. It’s a stake in the ground to appeal to a mass audience and show the world she’s here to stay.”

In a teaser clip of the much-anticipated interview, seen by People, the Duchess looks bubbly and at ease with her good pal Ellen.

It’s a huge contrast to her defeated look on Oprah back in March, where she and Prince Harry revealed bombshell allegations about the palace including questions about their unborn son’s skin colour.

But Meghan’s appearance on Ellen isn’t a dig at the palace – it’s a chance to “cement her celebrity status,” says Nick.

He adds: “Meghan will want to come across as self-assured, happy and creative. Her appearance will build on her appeal within the heartland of America and open her up in the USA.

“She will probably appear more as a celebrity rather than a royal and both appeal to the Ellen viewers.”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show comes to a close after 18 years this season after the host faced bullying allegations by ex-employees.

Former staff claimed the show encouraged a “toxic workplace” environment full of behind-the-scenes harassment.

They blasted the star for being a “nightmare” and an ex-bodyguard branded her “cold” and “demeaning”.

Some may question Meghan’s choice to be associated with Ellen, but Nick says it shouldn’t harm the Duchess.

He explained: “Meghan will have had a long talk about Ellen’s bullying allegations, but Ellen and her show are as popular as ever. It won’t have an effect on Meghan’s image and for Ellen it’s a real coup and ratings winner.

“The demographic of people who watch Ellen are very middle America – they love her. It’s a smart move for Meghan as it opens up her appeal to more people and doesn’t look so elitist as an interview with Oprah may look.

“This is a good move and it will create headlines worldwide. It will establish Meghan going forward.”
