Marvel Announces 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier': What is the Original Series All About?

Marvel Studios was hard at work over the weekend stealing the show at San Diego Comic-Con. While there was plenty of big news coming out about the MCU, one announcement, in particular, has fans extremely excited; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is coming to Disney Plus. The original series will likely serve as the flagship content for the new streaming platform and will be directly tied into everything that has gone on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier about?

Fans of the MCU have been promised continuity for the series, so it’s expected that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will pick up where Avengers: Endgame left off. In Avengers: Endgame, Captain America essentially passes his job onto Sam Wilson, better known as Falcon. As the successor to Captain America’s role, fans are likely to see Falcon take on new adventures, new battles, and brand-new storylines.

Zemo will continue to serve as a foil for Falcon, and likely will play a pivotal role in the series. According to Den of Geek, the early episodes of the series will probably deal with Sam coming to terms with the enormity of his new role, and Steve Rogers accepting that his role in the world is implicitly changed.

Deadline notes, however, that the studio masterminds behind the show are trying to keep the storyline hush-hush. Fans will need to wait until the series launches in the fall to truly find out what happens.

Who will star in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

The series will have plenty of familiar faces once it does launch. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie will both reprise their roles as the main characters in the series. They are not alone, though. Daniel Bruhl is officially signed on to reprise his role as Zemo, and Emily Van Camp is has been named in cast listings, too. She will continue as Sharon Carter.

While there is no official word on whether or not Chris Evans will be apart of the series, fans are surmising that he may show up to reprise his role as Captain America. According to Comic Book, Kevin Feige has assured fans that any series tied to marvel will be directly connected to the MCU. If that’s the case, Evans could show up on the streaming service, too.

For now, the show is greenlighted for six episodes. While Evans doesn’t appear in the cast list at the moment, it doesn’t mean he won’t be added at some point. The executives behind the series are remaining relatively quiet on future plans for the series.

Where will you be able to watch the series?

The series has been explicitly conceptualized for Disney Plus, a new streaming service set to go live in November 2020. Ahead of the streaming service’s launch, several major flicks and shows have been pulled from Netflix’s lineup.

Fans should be able to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when the service officially launches. The series, while it was just announced, does have a 2020 premiere date. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will join other Marvel content, as well as material from Pixar, Disney, and National Geographic. Star Wars is also expected to be housed on the platform.
