Japanese mum makes incredible creations out of food to get her picky kids to eat
A mum is putting all other parents to shame with her brilliant food creations.
Etoni Mama, from Tokyo, treats her three kids to characters made out of fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals including dumplings, sushi, noodles, and baked goods.
She turns every meal into a work of art, all to get her fussy kids to enjoy their meals.
You can expect to see Disney heroes such as the folks from Toy Story, Mickey Mouse, and Monsters Inc, as well as Winnie the Pooh and friends.
Carved out of kiwi, melons, cookies, and even eggs, the food entertains Etoni’s three children, aged 12, 10, and 8.
Etoni doesn’t have any training in food art but she is practicing a style of Japanese art called kyaraben.
This is a style of elaborately arranged bento, which features food decorated to look like people, characters from popular media, animals, and plants.
Japanese homemakers often spend time decorating their families’ meals, including their boxed lunches.
Etoni, who works as a nursery teacher, makes the creations in her spare time and it can take her up to an hour to come up with each design.
She got into kyaraben when her middle daughter became picky with her food.
As a way to tempt her into eating up, Etoni began decorating her meals with popular children’s characters.
Since then, she decided to keep at it, perfecting her art.
‘I started making the food to catch the interest of my [picky] daughter,’ Etoni tells Metro.co.uk.
‘The inspiration is to look at the ingredients and think of a character.
‘I work, and I don’t have much time, so I make them in about an hour.’
Etoni has gained quite the impressive following, given her immense talent.
She has amassed more than 150,000 followers on Instagram alone.
Fans often flock to her account to see her latest creation, often marvelling at the wonderful things she comes up with.
A recent fan favourite was a fried egg on toast which, of course, was no ordinary egg.
Using some food colouring, Etoni turned the yolk into a face to honour ancestors as part of the Japanese festival of Obon.
Etoni often uses events as inspiration for her food. She even managed to recreate the Wimbledon court, using greens as the pitch and sausages as spectators.
